I was thinking about getting Crysis2 or BlackOps.....  would my rig run it?

Dell DX4850

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2383241,00.asp

Core i5 Processor

6 GB memory

Intel GMA HD "on-board" graphics card

This rig runs COD2 on high graphic settings like a champ, but struggles with COD4, even on low graph settings.... playable, but not good.

My brother got me a sweet Radeon grahpics card for it, but later found out (after a catastrophe) that the power supply is too wimpy to run the card.  I read on the above review, that that it is a decent rig, but the power supply is a "vagina".  It hung up Windows 7 TOTALLY after card installation (wound up having to "re-image" the whole !*@$!*@#$&% hard drive ) .   Even after taking the new card out, it wouldn't boot.

I don't know much about video cards/ hardware, and a little afraid to try to put in another power supply for the new card & having to re-do my whole damned hard drive again..... what a pain in the fargin' ass.

Question - could I run Crysis2 or BlackOps on a playable level with this current rig?

Your PC is actually pretty good for day to day stuff but lacks sufficient power and graphics if you want to get into some heavier gaming.  I would check the physical dimensions of your current PSU and see what you can find to fit that case that is of higher wattage that can support a decent graphics card suitable for the newer games.

the best advice I can give you Ferret, is get the oldest card for the worst lagg, so just before you slice my thorat i can kill you. lmao, just kidding bro. I have a Radeon hd 6870, and it only requires a 500 watt, all though I paid more for the  900 watt, you should be able to fit at least a 600 watt in that case. you should have no problems with the hard drive just replacing the PSU. NewEgg 650 watt http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171052 hope this helps

The card I have is a Radeon 5750.  From what I understand, a decent mid-level card that *should* run most games OK.  Certianly a lot better than the factory on-board card in there now.  The 5750 card requires 450 W for a one-pin connector, the pc has like 275 available.

*REALLY* not wanting to load up everything again if it freezes Win7 up again..... if I did get a better power supply, would it be a problem to run that card with the on-board factory card that is in there now?  (would they run parallel or should I shut the old one off?)

Again, I'm not a hardware techie, but I think my processor is plenty fast enough but being held hostage by an average card.

Thanks for help, my friends.....

Not sure but if you have the onboard card enabled it might over ride the PCI-E one, seek help from bigger geeks, I am only a semi-nerd.

I just did a dell for a friend  with exact same issues as you. It was a slim line and one could not "easily" put in a 450-500watt PS due to space availability..... so I simply moved motherboard and drives to a used Dell standard tower.......bought a 500W power supply from newgg for $22.00 and a ATI 6670 for 84.95 and PRESTO.....works like a charm.  All you need is a power supply and you'll pay more at Dell for the same supply fyi.  Best of luck with it

the 5750 will be enough to run the actual games on low maybe even some medium settings...

like Merlin said have a look at the dimensions of the old psu and go for a 500 watts

that will be enough....

and disable the onboard after that not to cause trouble

Just to be sure I understand.... I *should* disable the on-board card if I put the new card in?

My brother said the same thing, but the guy at Geek Squad (when we tried to recover my old system image) said that disabling on-board cards will mess up my "driver hierarchy" (or something along those lines) and bug out the OS - and that I should let them run in parallel.  The Geek Squad guy seemd to know what he was talking about, but I dunno.

Sorry to be Mr. 50 questions.... but I am NOT a techie and all I want to do is play games without having to get a degree in computer science or pay someone $150 to plug in a card & load a driver or two. Undecided

Thanks for help, much appreciated!!

Haven't been on COD4 too much lately, the screen-flicker gives me epileptic siezures (not really, but a headache anyway).... but you have motivated to tough it out & come back more often & give you some "Ferret-love".  Hopefully a better card will let me sprint more without running into walls all the time lol

Tongue out

Turn of the onboard video if you put in another card and most of the Geek Squad people don't know shit. I have had to fix problems for friends that had the Geek Squad work on their PC's.

my two pennies worth? turn off the onboard card otherwise you wil get a hardware conflict [plain english both cards attempting to do the same job]

i think thats why they always advise guys to use a driver sweep program to dump the old drivers[again this is what i have found for me, but then again i have had two burnouts fooling around with the old "whats this do ? lol]

as for you buying another card, as victim of your game play on cod 4 my advise is too save for a really good card about 6/9 years will be enough time  for me too have moved on to cod 17 [by that stage you will be using light sabres not knivesLaughing]

Turning off the onboard card will not cause you any problems.  I have mine turned off and I would bet most of us that have good video cards have the onboard graphics turned off.  You turn off the on-board graphics in your BIOS, just in case you didn't know.  It is pretty easy to do.

Thought that might be the case.... but with my level of computer expertise, talking to those Geek Squad guys I feel like a soccer Mom getting told by a shady car repair shop that "you need to fix the hyper-drive, and put in a new flux capacitor & we can do that for a mere $3,500".     They haven't got a dime from me yet, and they ain't gonna.

Thanks for the advice though fellas, my brother is going to put the new power supply & card in next week, wish me luck... but THIS time I am going to have it backed-up properly & update the image disks, so I don't have to go through THAT farkin' nightmare again.Yell
