70 Years Ago Today: December 7, 1941: The Day of Infamy - Attack on Pearl Harbor

It is, arguably, the saddest day in U.S. military history -- certainly in modern U.S. military history -- the Civil War's Battle of Gettysburg probably is the saddest.

The day:

"Sunday, December 7, 1941, a date which will live in infamy," President Franklin D. Roosevelt said at the time.

And it has. Seventy years ago today, on Sunday, December 7, 1941, the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, was, as FDR put it, "suddenly and deliberately attacked," by the Empire of Japan.

2,402 U.S. Armed Forces Killed in Attack on Pearl Harbor

The attack triggered the U.S.'s entrance into World War II, with the U.S. declaring war on Japan on Dec. 8. The U.S. did not declare war on Japan's Axis partner Nazi Germany until Adolf Hitler declared war on the U.S. three days later.

It has been a major news story here in the UK, today, and for any who would question why, they should consider that, had this despicable and unprovoked attack on an innocent and peaceful nation not occurred, it is highly likely, if not probable, that the outcome of WW2 would have been greatly different.

Through necessity, the era of isolationism in the USA was ended abruptly and, with the Nazis' declaration of war, three days later, the seeds for later victory were sown.  Having endured the summer of 1940 alone against the threatening forces just 22 miles across the English Channel and with the RAF having won the Battle of Britain, the massive industrial resources of the USA and her huge Armed Forces were now brought into the battle alongside those of the UK and Commonwealth.

Those who lost their lives 70 years ago, were, in this Brit's eyes, martyrs to the cause of world freedom, even though many never had a chance to pick up a weapon.  I shan't forget them nor this date in the annual calendar nor, indeed, the debt of gratitude owed to all those who subsequently made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure the triumph over Nazi and Axis tyranny.  May they rest in peace.

Give us chance Sham - not all of us have access to the internet all day - LOL

I agree with Deejay's comments whole heartedly

While FDR knew the right thing to do was to enter WW2, he simply could not get the American people to buy into a war 4000 miles away in either direction. The age of weapons that could reach around the world were, in most people's eyes, still in the realm of Science Fiction. Little did everyone know in the US that Hitler was on the verge of developing the first ICBM and the world's first Nuclear bomb was right behind it, which would have brought the war home to US soil in dramatic and horrific fashion.

Fortunately for the free world, Japan, desperate to conquer the entire Pacific rim made one of the two costliest mistakes of WW2 (the other one being Hitler invading Russia before he completed the conquest of Western Europe.)

I think it was Admiral Yamamoto who said it best. "I am afraid we have simply awakened the sleeping Giant" (or words to that effect)

How right he was. This surely was the turning point in the war, and the beginning of the end of Japan and Germany

To all the servicemen and women and civilians who lost their lives on that day, Thank you and God Bless. If not for you, I would most likely be typing this in German, as would most of the world. (no offense to our German cousins, it is simply historical projection.

I wonder how long it would take this administration to open "Internment Camps" Like FDR Did for the Japanese Americans if it happened today?

120,000 Japanese American Citizens lost all Civil Liberties, Homes, Businesses & Belongings when they were rounded up in the 1940's.

So anyone that thinks you can't lose your Rights are very very wrong....

GOD BLESS ALL THOSE WHO SERVE OR HAS SERVED IN OUR ARMED FORCES!!!!!!
