I don't know how repeatedly kicking a man on the ground could be thought of as "self-defence", personally... It certainly is "violent conduct" and the ref only had one sanction available under the laws of the game - the red card. Footballers need to learn a little self-restraint. I am not sure I would have been able to restrain myself in that situation although once the security boys were on the scene, I would have backed away and not proceeded to try to lay one into the 'nads like he did.
