Considering he is one of the most likeable characters - even through book 5, I've always found that somewhat hard to accept. Although I do think he is one of the story's most effective plot engines. I saw a interview with the author a while back too, he said there is going to be lots of well known/loved characters getting killed off to make room for lots of new characters, he has to do it because the cast list is so big there will not be enough time to fit everyone in, so i don't know if it means the series will vary from the books or not as i ain't read any of the books. That sucks... I hope they don't kill off anyone I like.

Well, I can tell you that a lot of the characters get killed off in the books, so I don't think they will have any problems staying true to the story in the TV show. It's like a Medieval Sopranos Bogleg 1

Undoubtedly many of your favorite characters will die. . I will say this, two of my favorite 10 characters have so far made it to book 6. Lol! Hemps 1 Awards

The 3rd season will be based roughly on the first half of The Storm of Swords book. (3rd book) so it looks like HBO has plenty of material for several more seasons, plus more when Martian finishes The Winds of Winter(which he is already working on) and A Dream of Spring.
