Hi Everyone,

I'm wondering if anyone has run across this problem and if so, were you able to conquer it?

I have just recently acquired an ASUS GTX460 graphics card and figured I'd throw it in my system because it was a helluva lot better than the one I was running.

The ASUS card has two DVI outputs and one mini HDMI. I have it connected to a 42" LG HDTV (I know huh! lol) from DVI-1 to an HDMI adapter then to the TV with an HDMI cable.

The problem occurs because it seems this particular video card (and maybe they do that now I dunno) includes on board audio so the video and sound is piped directly through the card to the display and the sound works fine there. It was an easy fix to just hook my computer speakers to the headphone jack to the TV and voila it rocks!

The problem occurs when I go to play COD 4  because there is no detectable mic, the game will crash every time! I've had this problem before with COD 4 and if I disable the mic in Windows or unplug it, the game crashes. Right now I'm dead in the water and the game won't even start in safe mode so I could maybe disable voice chat and see if that doesn't help. Because the video card installs it's own audio drivers, it basically disables the motherboard on board audio and therefore I have no sound coming from the motherboard on the computer and the mic doesn't work either.

They all show up in Windows 7 but Windows really won't let ya do much with em. With the motherboard sound before, it would display when the speakers were connected or not or whether a mic was connected to the front panel or rear panel and so forth. Now it just shows them as disconnected devices and if they are disconnected there is no functionality obviously in Windows and I know it's because the video card drivers have pretty much disabled any sound coming out of or going into the motherboard audio.

My BIOS doesn't give me the option to pick which audio I want to use. It only allows me to enable or disable the on board audio of the motherboard and I've tried that. I've removed all the drivers for both the graphics card (including the audio drivers that install separately) and the motherboard audio drivers, re installed the motherboard audio drivers and still no luck. The graphics card even in it's diminished state still supersedes any other audio device.

I'm thinking my options are: 1) See if there is an update and flash the BIOS which I've never done before and really don't want to screw up Windows which I'm guessing it will do. 2) Go back to my original setup which the graphics sucked on but at least I could play the game. 3) Install a separate sound card (which I don't have) and I'm not sure if that would work anyway 4) Re install the game itself with my computers new configuration 5) Pray to the computer gods for a patch 6) Maybe just take up basket weaving.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated as long as they're constructive. I was just wondering if anyone else has run into this situation and if so, what was your solution? I would love to continue to be able to use this graphics card and I really just wanna get back to doing some killing.

I'm running an ASUS X58 Sabertooth Motherboard, an Intel i950 Processor @ 3.07Ghz, 8GB RAM, and Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit.

I am taking a stab in the air that you should be able to go to the device manager and disable the sound/mike/or whatever and then it should stop the problem. I would like if somebody in the know could confirm and or correct if I am wrong or right. I have had to do this on an older system before and it worked so just from what you told us I think it should work for you too.

Hi Dean,

Yea I've tried that. No luck. Tried disabling the video card sound (NVIDIA HD Audio appears 4 times in Device Manager). I've also hooked up a different monitor directly with a DVI cable, no luck. Re installed Realtek Audio Drivers (for the motherboard) and enabled everything, no luck. There are no conflicts in Device Manager and everything is enabled. I'm going to disable everything and see if the game will run without sound. Maybe I can at least shut off voice and then it might work again.

Just took a couple screenshots of Windows Sound and here is the screwy thing. The speakers show as not being connected but they are and Windows shows headphones connected. There are no headphones connected. I have the mic plugged into the motherboard jack and Windows shows it as the front mic is plugged in. There's no mic connected to the front. I've also tried plugging things into the front jack, no luck. Needless to say, this confuses the hell out of me. lol My guess is the video card is actually screwing up the sound circuitry in the motherboard and that's why I'm getting wierd locations for things that aren't even plugged in. Maybe some kind of backfeed through the circuit on the motherboard perhaps?  I dunno. I'll probably just have to go back to the old video card if I want to play again. Thanks for your help!

Try going into the bios and disabling the on-board sound. Also if you are using the dvi jack on the video card this will produce NO audio. And therefor no sound from the video card period. I always use the jack on the sound card or the jack out the back of the pc...Never the front jack. the front jack must be plugged into the correct spot on the mother board. You may have it plugged into the wrong one. Most PC cases come with 2 sets of wires for sound, High def and regular. Unplug either and just use the back. A better fix may be just to get a sound card if you have an available slot. That would be the best solution. Use a actual sound card and disable the on board in the bios.........hope this helps.

Hi Kapt,

To answer your question, before the 460 I was running an ASUS EAH5450 Silent with 1GB DDR3. The problem I had with that card was I had to scale back the graphics in the game (shadow, smoke, etc.) just to get it to run at a decent pace without lag which it would do terribly if I cranked things up. That was on a 24" monitor. Well I recently hooked up a 42" LG HDTV to that card and started getting alot of pixelating and lines in the display which I just figured the card couldn't handle that large of display. The 5450 has no fan and uses the system fan to cool and that fan was running like crazy all the time so I think the 42" display is just too much for it.

I was given the 460 (yes really) and had it all working fine. Graphics were tremendous and sound worked with no problems. I played a few rounds in COD 4 and was pleased with the results. All of a sudden I had no sound whatsoever in Windows and couldn't even get in the game. It just crashes upon startup. I suspect just rebooting the computer after install and running the first time was what changed things.

If I hook the smaller monitor back up the game will run but I still have no sound. Mind you the smaller monitor is directly connected with a DVI cable from the video card to the monitor. When I hook up the TV, I have to use a DVI to HDMI adapter because the TV has no DVI connection.

I know HDMI carries audio as well as a video signal and I'm thinking DVI only carries a video signal. I still can't figure out how to disable the sound in the video card to the point where it won't interfere with the motherboard audio which is what I need to do to keep the game from crashing. NVIDIA's website doesn't really address the issue and they're fix doesn't even work on this machine. They suggest turning the audio off in NVIDIA Control Panel which I do but that just leaves me with no sound whatsoever. Onboard sound still has no functionality. COD 4 has always crashed on me if the mic wasn't connected and configured properly in any instance so I'm thinking because the onboard audio is being disabled by the video card, I'll never get it to work right in the game.

I really don't care if the mic works or not and that would be a fair trade off for having an awesome display in the game. I can run HDMI to the larger display with the 460 and have sound out of the TV no problem but I won't be able to play the game because it still can't detect a microphone and will crash.

I'll look into what BIOS Version I have and see if I can update it. Maybe there's a fix there. This system is roughly 3 years old and I've not experimented much with BIOS or graphics in a long time so I'm just debating if it's even worth it. I may just go back to the smaller display and 5450 video card until I can build a better system to handle the newer video card. Fortunately I have time on my hands right now. Unfortunately I don't have the money. lol Isn't that how it goes sometimes?

Thanks for your response. I've not seen this problem before but I've not kept up with the latest advances in graphics and such. I only hoped that maybe someone else had a similar problem and was able to correct it. I'll keep looking and if I come up with a decent solution I'll surely post in the forums for all to see. Peace!

Yes WiZid I was thinking I may have to get a separate sound card and go that route. I never use the front jacks and whats got me baffled is Windows shows that I have devices hooked to the front but there's not. In the pic I posted it also shows headphones which are not connected and it shows speakers not connected which are! All directly to the motherboard! I also have a mic hooked to the back and it doesn't show that either but says there's a mic hooked to the front panel which there isn't. I am going to disconnect the front jacks altogether and see if maybe I have something screwy there. I did not know there were separate connections for HD sound and standard. It's all worked fine until I installed the 460 but something still might be off in there and installing the 460 might have brought it out. I've disabled the onboard audio in the BIOS and it doesn't help. That was one of my first thoughts that it's just a conflict so disabling the onboard was the logical thing to do.

I appreciate the input! I'll let you know how it goes!

I see that 460 has a mini-HDMI port

VGA BIOS update application for ENGTX460 Series cards.
Patch the cards with Hynix memory may have distorted screen issue when cool boot

update if needed

MB d/l's

to check pins outs for front panel header  manual.pdf

software to update mb bios  with  current bios file

would get me a mini-HDMI  to HDMI 1.4 adapter or cable to hook to screen note: c plug or use adapter

the x58 MB needs lot of cooling on the VR's (between cpu and back panel) and chipset, what  temp are running on chipset

Hi Kapt,

Thanks for the links and info! I couldn't find anything to update the 460 BIOS so I appreciate the link! Is there anyway to access the 460 BIOS or to find out which one is on the card now?

My question is if I update the mainboard BIOS do I have to do each one or can I just update with the latest one? There are 4 updates past the version I'm running (Version 0802). If I update the BIOS will it mess up Windows? I'm assuming not because I have the ASUS Update software installed in Windows but I'd like to be sure before I dive in.

As for the temperature, the cpu normally runs around 118 and will peak around 145 when in a game. Those are the only numbers I have and the chipset numbers may be different? I'm not sure how to find those. I don't have any sensors installed other than what PC Meter tells me and it just gives me core temps for each of the 8 cores. I've never had any issues with temperature or anything like that other than when I was running the 5450 and the 42" display. The x58 actually has a nice coating that is designed to dissipate heat efficiently and I'm running two chassis fans which will increase in speed as the system heats up. Those all seem to be working well.

Anywho, thanks again for the info. I may run out to the puter store later today and look for an mini HDMI to full size HDMI cable but I don't think that will solve my problem. It is a good excuse to go to the computer store tho! lol Thanks again for all your help!

enable stereo mix....don't assign it as the default device...and also right click on blank space and hit show hidden devices...that should help...but enabling stereo mix will not cause your game to crash...let us know if that works...also whatever device you are using make sure it is set to accept the signal from whatever device you choose,,,if i don't have stereo mix enabled i can,t play at all...try these few tips and let me know what options you have in the sound properties...we shall get to the bottom of this ...its probably something simple and idiot like. also make sure you have the current up to date nvidia hq sound drivers....they come with the total driver package...make sure you do the clean install option on the vid driver package and uncheck the nvidia updater..i heard its a bitch to get rid of...but give it a whirl and let us know time for a bong.....he he

don't use your video sound out...it won't work use a dvi-d.....its just as good and plug your speakers into the back...[motherboard] enable speakers as default device....and just enable everything else...if you use it ,,,,at least it will show its plugged in....the hd audio doesn't work either unless you have a decoder receiver type set up...use a dvi-d for vid...and hook up speakers to the on board realtek motherboard sound...then after that you can use a decoder type setup[receiver]...just make sure everything is enabled...it won't be assigned as a default device unless you do it....remember enable stereo mix..right click on blank space to show hidden devices..and make sure it says speakers are plugged in as default device...don't bother messing with nvidia sound...i have the 5.1 logitech thx z5500 with a built in decoder and this baby is loud...i just use supremem fx2 motherboard card...came with my Asus Rampage 2 Extremem mobo...plugged in my speakers and my logitech mic..and thats it...make sure you assign the correct speakers and enable stereo mix and show hidden devices enable all [not default] and it will work as needed...i have my speakers plugged into the mobo on board and my mic into the onboard as well...and thats all i do....good luck bro

for video card bios the utility

ASUS

Smart Doctor version 5.80

Smart Doctor provides 3 major features:

1. VGA

card information and running status for GPU temperature, GPU fan speed(optional)

and so on.

2. Overclocking feature.

3. GPU temperature detection.

If

your VGA card supports Smart Doctor, after the installation of Smart Doctor

(Don't forget to install VGA driver and ASUS GamerOSD), you will have both 3

features.

for MB bios  just need current  its the linked one ^  Note: MB disk should have softare to update bios maybe called Asus Suite

for temps can see them in bios hardware moniter section or use asus utility

Thanks again everyone for all your help!!

Seems flashing the BIOS did the trick. I still don't have any sound coming from the motherboard whatsoever and hence the mic doesn't work but I'm sure you guys won't miss my smart mouth anyway. The game launches without crashing and I can play in Full 1920x1080. Looks awesome and it's fast. No lag whatsoever and I have sound through the TV for game play and I'm satisfied with that.

I'm going to see if I can find out from ASUS why their graphics card is overriding the on board sound for one of their motherboards. If I gain anymore information I'll post it. Kill ya later!

Kill ya later!

administrative tools.....services.....disable the 3d  nvidia...disable the nvidia hd sound....then reboot....go into sound properties and enable the stereo mix...as well...then take a screen shot ....and post it here..then we can see,,,when i installed my gtx 580sc it took out my sound too...i disabled it in services reinstalled my sound drivers and voila...let us know if this simple couple clicks of a mouse works...as well it should show in device manager four times....and your realtek ones on the bottom, try that.

ok I have on board audio with a asrock board but running NVidia 560 and have no problem .514f4666e7859_sound.png

only time should be using NVidia audio is to the tv and for it to work properly I think u have to use hdmi from the card to tv not dvi to hdmi adapter.

also in my device manager it shows. 514f484ac50c2_sounddevicemanager.png

I hope this helps . by the way my mic is usb. that might be different . I also use 5.1 head phone but have a adapet or double input to put head phone and speakers on same line.a splitter.

Inglorious Bastard,

I had similar issue as you were experiencing with my gtx500 series and Wind7. Here is what I found helpful in correcting the problem I had. I don't remember where exactly I found this maybe at Nvidia website. you need to poke around with lower sreen shot (Device Manager) that ReaPeR attached above. that But here it is:

Answer / Solution

This issue can be caused by a conflict with the onboard audio controller on your new Nvidia card and your motherboard audio.

You can try the following uninstall method which will fully disable the audio and should help eliminate the issues you are experiencing.

1. Go into Device Manager- In the Display adapers area right click on the 400/500 series card, and select "Properties" this will give you a listing such as "PCI Bus 3, device 0, function 0" If using multiple cards please check and note each listing.

2. Go under "System Devices", you will see HD audio devices. Check them to see which one matches your GTX 400 series PCI Bus location. Disable (not uninstall) the one that matches your 400/500 series card.

3. Check under "Sound Devices" and it should no longer be there (this step might or might not require a restart)
