lol yep, i just desactivated the windows update in case, i cant afford to buy it brand new, and even if i have 3 XP licenses, must say i cracked those because windows is really too boring with activation and all.

when u install a new HD or anything, u have to call microsoft to reactivate your windows, honestly, way too much hassle

Think Microsoft is trying too hard, and should give up already.  They can't control something that has no control. Unless they completely get rid of the internet, or computers for that matter, it will continously happen.  And I'm sure microsoft will get some answers back from a few hackers if something does go wrong.

A shame it's voluntary. Microsoft should force it, and the update should wipe the hard drive of an illegal installation.

1998, I was attending the tradeshow, Comdex in Las Vegas. While approaching Microsoft's booth, I bumped head-on into Bill Gates knocking him to the ground. He immediately got up and began making sure that I was okay. He brushed off my clothes from my shoulders to my knees while applogizing the entire time.

I think that he was rubbing the soot off his hands onto my clothes... Well played Bill Gates!

By the way for you budding pirates (arrgh) the update is now it - it came out last night and it is voluntary, it is called

Update for Windows 7 for x64-based systems  (KB971033)

You have to read the details to know its the activation exploit 'fix'

Its only a matter of time now before MS makes it more than a voluntary update though, so if you are pirating and I am sure no one here is (more coughing) I would suggest updating to a legal version soon, but thats up to you

Like people say, if it can be programmed, it can be hacked. and I am sure as soon as MS makes it a required update there will be a hack for the fix

They say the first exploit came out 2 days after the first beta version of 7 was released!!!!!!! Wonder where that one came from (Redmond, Washington by any chance?)

I thought microsoft was more into prosecuting the people who made the exploits rather than the exploitees. Time to read that article now! Just read it.

Yeah, right now it will be more of a pain in the butt than anything else. Prior to owning 7, I had a totally legal copy of Vista home basic on my gaming computer, which sucked. I got my hands (cough, cough) on a copy of Vista Ultimate and when the 'patch' came out, once a week or so I would get an annoying message on my screen telling me the copy of Windows was not validated and probably counterfeit. Nothing else happened, so I simply left it like that and lived with the message.

I agree that Microsoft deserves to be paid for developing software, but at the same time, I dont feel like paying 6 times over as, in my house, there are 6 viable computers, and with 7, each one has to have its own, clean copy. For 7 Ultimate, that would be over a thousand dollars and that is simply out of my price range. I also feel that you should get value for money, and while 7 is the best one they have ever produced, I lived the Vista and ME nightmares, so I feel a little vindicated not having clean copies on every machine in the house.

They are aggresively pursuing the exploiters. They just busted a 2bn dollar operation in Southern China which made counterfeit Windows products. Makes you wonder just how many fake copies of MS stuff there is out there.

Theres a little more detail here on exactly what it will do (for now)
