Do you have an auto darkening shield?

They are really nice for TIG welding and have come down significantly on price.

been wanting to get a tig welder for a long time now, but they always been very pricey. always wanted to be able to weld all metals, stainless, aluminum, ect. and also make very small welds that my oxy acetylene, mig welder couldn't.and since where i live now i dont have the use of a 220v, it needed to be 110v, so i finally got one from longevity, sure it made in china, but the price was great, and it had great reviews, and a friend of mine who welds for a living got one and said it was a good welder for what i needed. welded 1/4 steel with no problem, and the small welds i did where great! was able to make my 1st aluminum welds...some where ok, need to work on that.

so my 1st project was a welding table and since i now have a tiny garage, i made it a folding table

and here's a "Gear Lamp" I made, almost done, just need to be cleaned up a bit, paint or powder coat not sure what yet, and a printed canvas weaved between the rods to finish off the shade

here's them tiny welds i was wanting to be able to make

525b18939e5d8_littlewelds004.jpg

and a extra deep 7/16 socket for me when im installing some faucets at work

so far im very happy with this welder. got a bunch more projects and cant wait to get to them!

even got a >XI< lamp i started a while ago, ill be able to finish it up now with the new welder!

Very nice looking welding beads. Very pretty. I tigged stainless steal once.. not too hard but aluminum. I think I would burn that shit up. lol

I would never recommend one of them. They don't darken fast enough and it will effect your eyes over time. Not sure if you can get flash burns but still.

But they may have fixed that.

Sorry, HXTR, need disagree with you but also admit at one time I thought the same as you.

They have become an industry standard and work very well. With TIG welding it allows you to be right on your start point without guessing in the dark.

To qualify myself I am a Journeyman Tool and Die welder, automotive industry and still work in the industry as a technical representative for Eureka Welding Alloys who manufacture specialty FCAW wires and SMAW electrodes. And while I am being technically correct TIG is GTAW. Gas Tungsten Arc Welding.

So there..............nyaah, nyahh, nyahh, :respect::lol::innocent:

Maybe it is when they came out in 1989 or 88 when I heard of them. But my neighbor a welder told me not even long ago they were bad. Sure things have changed as he as not welded professionally in a bit. About as old as you... Very old. lol jk

But so understand about being right up on it. Aim and seeing the puddle as it happens and able to keep that focus. That would have helped me big time period. One thing I hate is when using stick stick and trying to start on a spot you have to them end up moving pulling the hood down. TIG is way worse. You have to be precise and two steady hands to make it work and make it look great as these pictures. I need mistake room like like in a MIG, ARC or Oxy. I want a plasma torch... I want to cut stuff up. What a cool invention. .

Plasma cutting is awesome. Especially since it allows you to cut non-ferrous material like aluminum and stainless.

good that you worked for yourself.... it is not easy at times. But less bullshit.

i went to a welding tech school for a couple years and was wanting to become a welder before i fell into plumbing, never got to start learning tig or mig back then, it was all oxy and stick. the first thing i bought was a victor oxy acetylene kit and tanks, and did all my welding that way for years til i got a miller mig. but id have to say tig is very much like oxy welding but with out all that heat and much more control. love it!

I tried tig stainless about 8 months about. My boss that moved had a rig. Look me a bit to get close enough to see the puddle. Once I got it started it was moving along good. Look ok but with practice sure I could get better. Stick was great for when smoking weed at school. The made enough smell and smoke to hide anything. lol hahaha

An example of some of the work I am involved with, this die is on the smaller side. Many dies are bigger than a large desk.

CrankshaftDie_zpse521e08a.jpg

It is a forging die for a crankshaft that is worn and needs repair. The impression is gouged out using carbon arc and the refilled with specific weld material using the GMAW (MIG) process with 1/8" diameter wire. We call it "Flood Welding" and the puddle diameter is often in excess of 2" diameter. Volts are about 32-34 and amperage about 600 to 800. Water cooled torches are generally used but so are some air cooled torches (guns).

A competitors video of a manipulator we also sell. Most times they are welded with hand held MIG guns, not a fun job in the heat of summer.

Dies are heated to 950 deg F for welding and heat is controlled throughout the process followed by specific heat treating procedures depending on the base alloy and weld alloys used.

After heat treatment it is re-sunk by CNN or EDM.

Then back in service with usually better die life than the original base alloy.
