No doubt there's more activity in the XI member forums but things are somewhat flat over here in registered-user land. Other than well-wishes for various things or expressions of sympathy for folks having a tough time for various reasons, there's not a whole lot to talk about here.

We have forums for hunting/fishing/shooting, auto repair, and computer help but that's it. Is anyone interested in additional forums that all users would have access to, i.e., hobbies, woodworking, arts/entertainment, health, food & drink, literature, travel/vacations, pets, sports, etc. and etc. Other ideas? Adding forums is relatively easy providing management agrees to do so, but there's no point in doing so if they aren't used. Perhaps launching one at a time with a moderator who has an intense interest in that particular topic to get things going?

Of course, opinion is always a good conversation starter but that basically includes the two taboos: politics and religion - and they're taboo because they ALWAYS result in name-calling and personal damage. Is it possible though to discuss economics without politics rearing its ugly head? I don't think so but perhaps you have some thoughts on how such conservations could be controlled and held to focus?

Another approach is to add blogs - again, subject to approval - by users expert in various topics and given the size of the membership, there's no doubt any number of folks who could add great content to attract and grow the user base.

Just searching for ways to enliven the experience, and get more folks involved in the web site.

   Thoughts anyone???

Why does it need to "grow"?

Its upkeep already requires a great of effort and work.

The focus of our gaming community is primarily games, after all.

I'm sure there are woodworking communities out there somewhere.

Moderation of content is always going to be a problematic issue in an

international community.  What goes or is expected in one country could

be unlawful in another.

Just about any topic may fall prey to being politicised...

"Did you hear about the tax on wood and screws they're bringing in?", and,

bang, off it goes into the black hole of the Politics Forum.

My motivation tends toward moving forward, improving and growing whatever I'm involved in; doubtless others have different motivations. And indeed, perhaps XI has reached optimum size in all respects; perhaps not - hence the discussion.

Moderated interest areas and blogs do not require extensive technical support.

OK, you've explained your motivation for the suggestion but not how what you suggest may benefit XI.

I don't know what an "optimum" size means, frankly.  In the context of the web site, there's already far

too much being posted for one to read daily with comfort.

With the exception of the "boobs & bun" forum for XI members, which has a small but devoted group of people that post almost daly, nearly all new posts on this web site are in the general forum for everybody to see. General means just that, and I really don't see a need to have special forums for different subjects when they can all be posted in one place. You really aren't missing much lately in the members only forums.

If you want to talk about something just throw it out there, I doubt if anybody will mind.

LOM is right.  Most posts are in the general forums category, and everyone has access.  I would be reluctant to as "specialized" topics, as they tend to either exclude some who are not part of that interest group, or they end up being political is some way.  I like the way things are ATM.  If anyone has abny suggestions, that's fine.  We are always open to new ideas.
