LTC James Doolittle made the decision to immediately launch all bombers at 0830 hours in gale force winds (45kt) and 30 foot seas. Doolittle's raiders struck from Tokyo to Osaka incurring only superficial damage. But, the boost to American morale in the aftermath of Pearl Harbor was immeasurable. 73 of 80 pilots and crewmen survived the raid. They then headed back to Pearl Harbor for a turn around for the Battle of Coral Sea. Edited October 20, 2014 by loaderXI little_old_man, Spartacus, codpiece and 2 others 5 Awards

The loss of U.S.S. Hornet wasn't exactly the navy's proudest moment. Burning and abandoned, and left for two Japanese destroyers to finish off. Guadalcanal was a horrific series of naval encounters that cemented the Imperial fleet's fate. And that was before the Essex class came online, along with the Hellcat, Avenger, and Helldiver to seal naval air supremacy. A lot of brave sailors went down with great ships. Wasp, Astoria, Quincy, Vincennes, Atlanta, Juneau, along with many destroyers in the night actions around Savo. My uncle Melvin & his best friend Paul Davis served during that campaign. loaderXI and Sonovabich 2 Awards

His ship was sunk off the Horn of Africa a few weeks after his leave and after having sailed the same route for a few years by a very well know German Sub...Would have look up again in his records to tell the actual facts but I love all of History... Also while some Ships are known better then others they ALL played there role in WWII and to me it is important to remember.. P.S no other Sailors or Navy in my family but my Grandad Awards

Here's a pic from my archives. That's the New Orleans, caught a torpedo from the Tokyo Express, and lost everything from B turret forward. Amazes me the horrific damage that ships took in that conflict, and survived. Those boys had gumption. loaderXI, Spartacus and codpiece 3 Awards

One book I'd recommend is The Last Battle Station, it deals with the east Asia squadron, the loss of the Phillipines, and the invasion of Java. Nobody knew what became of HMAS Perth & USS Houston until survivors were found as POWs in Japan. Sad stories, but they need to be told, and remembered. loaderXI and codpiece 2 Awards
