I could have kept working till i was 65,but then think, I would have prevented a kid or person not being able to have that job for 14 years.I was making $28/hr and if I stayed now I would be making $34/hr  and that boy or girl would be on some type of assistance. The longer you stay in the work force the harder it will be for our sons and daughters to find work. Then how long do you think you are going to live on this planet and be able to move around as well as you did.I check obits daily and people die, some old and quite a few do not make it to retirement.A lot of this depends how well you get paid.I'm glad I was in a union that allowed me to be able to retire at an early age and even more lucky cause my wife also retired 2 years after I did.

Well said @JohnnyDos  I agree with you. I worked for the City of New York for 28yrs. I retried at 55yrs of age. I was a Shop Steward for Local 237 Teamsters for 20yrs one of the biggest Unions in the City. I was blessed I loved my Job and just like you I made $28.00 an hour, I could have stayed till 65yrs of age. I think we need to pass our good fortune forward if possible, to let another young person build a family like I did and to be able to retire in there latter years like I did. I have always hated when co-workers told me that if you retire you will die. Well my friends we all die sooner or later, I hope to live more than the 28yrs I put in GOD willing. Tomorrow is not promised to anyone, work to live do not live to work.

I didn't hold this job but I was mistaken as a prostitute once back in 1988 I was still in high school but I was 18 so of legal age. My bike broke and I was walking to work on a beautiful Saturday morning.... then this white guy in a oxidized red Ford single cab pickup with a stranger inside offered me a ride. Don't get in like I did..... you might get a different kind of education thank expected. Talk about an awkward moment..... , "Humm... no thank you.... thanks for the ride".

I can't wash this memory out of my mind. I could have made a killing that night.

Excellent points Mr Dos.

The attitude of "having enough" and seeing the need to let others step up to provide for themselves and their families is worthy of a medal a very big medal! Virtually no one thinks along those lines anymore. Very few people have the capability to see how retirement age impacts the availability of jobs for young people and you not only see it you used it as a guideline for when to retire . . . Outstanding!

When a person plans for retirement many times the body is overlooked.

Most retirement plans provide for financial security but none measure the usability of the body the plan is written for.

In other words, You can plan and save all you want but if your body is shot and you can't get out and enjoy life the money is pointless. IMHO

In retrospect I was fortunate that the housing industry crashed in California back in 2008-2009. The result of the turn down in new homes being built was a severe drop in sales for my business forcing me to close the doors after 25years. Over those 25years I concentrated on avoiding credit card debt and paying mortgages and this good planning allowed me to retire at 50. I didn't plan to retire until I was 55 but I would gladly give up those 5 years of extra money to have "my wheels"(legs) and body in good shape to be able to get out and do the things I like to do.

The way society has gone towards buying everything on long term credit is forcing people to work to an older age.

Thing is you cant get a loan for retirement . . .  no one will loan money to someone that wont be alive to pay it off.

Budtender another plump bud for Mr Dos and I in the Vaporizer     . . . . ..no tab I'm paying cash! :cool:

I didn't read your post until after I wrote this so I wanted to acknowledge you as well for the outstanding attitude you have about working to live and not living to work. It's apparent from the tone of your post that your happy and content with the decision you made to retire while you still feel  . ..  youngish . . .lol

If you indulge in vaporization then allow me to buy you a round also

I work for Hewlett Packard in the UK as a Technical Field Engineer Level 4 on a contract for the Ministry Of Defence fixing multi vendor equipment from HP, Dell, Cisco, BlueCoat, APC UPS's, laptops, monitors, we kind of cover all kinds of IT related  equipment! We are also responsible for the network side of things for the MoD and also for other Government departments such as The Ministry Of Justice & Home Office.

I'm also on a 1 in 3 roster for out of hours break / fix on contracts for Barclays Banking Group, JP Morgan and a huge contract covering warehouses, distribution centres and stores for Tesco supermarket across the country but mainly in the south & west of England and across into South Wales too, more or less the area covered in blue on the picture below.

I'm also a Team Leader for a group of 7 engineers in this area so spend a lot of my time doing paperwork & sorting out the day - to - day running of the area...
