Well, first off, I just got my new PC and finished building it with a little help from my cousin, and I've had my problems with it already, but seemed to fix it.  I installed COD4 via CD and I installed the patches, and when I try to load Multiplayer, I always get this error. I can play Singleplayer just fine.  My sound is working properly, my PC installed it for me, I also uninstalled it and installed a realtek audio driver, in case it didn't work, but it didn't work still.

Anyone have any type of solution or fix for this problem?

don't know if i can help but, i know realtek has a problem with cod4, if you have a sound card and the realtek is onboard, go into setup and disable the realtek or hdaudio.  make sure the sound card drivers are up to date. then try it...it's a problem that doesn't have a set solution.  hope that helps....

same problem here, this is what i found to solve the problem

Method 1: Resolve Issues with Soundcard Driver

Iw3mp.exe error is known to occur due to problems with sound card drivers. One method that is known to resolve the issue is to uninstall the sound card drivers for realtek and other similar cards and install the default driver on the PC.

You may use the following method to uninstall sound card:

  1. Open Start menu, select Run, type sysdm.cpl and then press Enter to display the System Properties dialog box.
  2. On the Hardware tab, Device Manager.
  3. In the Device Manager window, expand Sound, video, and game controllers.
  4. Right-click the sound card driver and then select Uninstall.

After uninstalling, it is recommended that you use a good registry tool, such asRegGenie to clean your registry and remove any left behind entries. After removing the sound card, install the default sound card drivers on your PC. When you do this, note the make and model of your sound card. You may need this information later on.

Method 2: Install Required Updates

You may need to update the following:

  • Install Call of Duty 4, patch 1.5. Before installing, ensure that you already have patch 1.4 installed, otherwise you may encounter problems.
  • If you are running the game on a secondary partition, you may have to download the latest BIOS updates from your motherboard manufacturer and follow the other applicable solutions posted.
  • On Windows Vista Dell computer with Sigmatel onboard sound cards, you may be able to resolve the error by installing latest Windows Vista update and updating the Dell drivers. To update drivers of your PC easily, you may choose to use a reliable driver scanner tool such as Driver Detective to the task automatically for you.

Method 3: Use Headphones When the Game is Running

You may do one of the following:

· Change default audio device to headphones and then play the game.

  • Plug in a microphone or headphones into the microphone/headphone jack to play the game.

Method 4: Enable Stereo Mix if you have Realtek sound card drivers on Windows Vista computer.

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Hardware and Sound.
  3. Select Sound and then display the Recording tab in the Sound dialog box.
  4. Right-click in the window and select the Show Disabled Devices option.
  5. Enable Stereo Mix.
  6. Click OK and exit

hope this work ,cya on battlefield

Its not the mod, because MP won't even load at all and its a freshly installed version of COD4. no mods are installed right now either.

Tried what you said and did not work. My default sound drivers installed are High Definiton Audio Device.

Under the Sound Window, I have 2 things for Playback devices. One is Speakers, and the other is Digital Audio (S/PDIF.) Both running from the same driver, except Speakers play back is the only thing that works, the other one doesn't.

I've also patched it from 1.1-1.7 already.

Edit: Erm, well, it works now apparently. I plugged in my broken headset, and enabled all the playback devices and it loaded the game.  Working now.

I think the Realtek HD Audio is already been fixed after so many updates they are giving to us. (Second post btw in the last week)

"Don't fix it, when its not broken"  doesn't count anymore if people are way behind in updates ;)

I even started to install beta/preview driver versions of hardwardware software and easy uninstall with 'roll-back' driver. Just make sure you make a "System Retore Point" if you catch an error and such.

Worked for me!  If the onboard sound causes the problem, don't use it - buy a USB external soundcard...

Others have found that simply plugging headphones in cures the problem.  It is very common.
