We bought a 65-inch, 4k Vizio smart TV last October. Every now and then we hear a very loud crack and the screen goes black for a second or two. It may happen three times in one night, and it may not happen again for another week. The sound is very loud. About the only thing I can relate it to is a circuit breaker closing. There is no smell of anything burning.

Googling this, I cannot find an identical issue for Vizeo or any other maker. There are some folks who are hearing a noise associated with the chassis expanding or contracting from heat but nothing like what we're hearing.

Vizio ran us through their reset process. The next call (this morning) they suggested it might be an issue with the cable box input and they want me to watch another input, i.e., DVD player or some app continuously to see if it repeats from an input other than the cable box. Of course, that's ridiculous. The sound is coming from the TV, not the cable box. They're just stalling me and so after a few days I'll call back and lie to them that it happened while we were watching a movie. That's all I can do.

But I can't find any information on what this could be. What device could a TV have that could produce such a sound? Any ideas?

Thanks!!

Thanks Johnny. We're seated fairly close to it and without question, HD looks much better.

So how could the power supply make this noise? It sound like a static discharge, only it's loud enough that you can hear it downstairs.

We had the same issue with our T.V. I believe it had something to do with the screen but I would have to ask Cross. Our T.V. finally died and the warranty covered it.

Oh, I'd appreciate if you would ask and reply here. You're the first person I've found who had the same problem. I'd like to be able to suggest something to the inept at Vizio's call center next time I talk to them.

@@HarryWeezer I had this problem before, my TV would make a popping sound and it was loud and it would happen a few times in one sitting. My tv was a Samsung and they send a tech over and he said it was one of the compacitors that kept popping so they replaced the tv. Hope this helps.

Also @ , I just recently bought a 65'' Samsung 4k tv and the picture is absolutely amazing. Makes 1080p look stunning! Looks so real you have to turn down the motionflow rate so it doesn't seem like you're watching a soap opera (Soap opera effect is real!).

The screen was a different issue. The popping noise was from the power unit.

Hey Harry....use to work on TV's for living. Sounds as if you have a High voltage problem....possibly a tripler in the power supply circuit. You probably want to stop using the TV because it could eventually damage the set permantly!!  The high voltgae section is what powers the screen of the TV.

Hope this helps!

Well Harry...I know everything...just ask me  :D, that and I googled your problem and read a few different links...while not all brands were a perfect match the issue and problem were the same...one last thing...I am well versed with electronics....

Thanks AJ but I've also Googled this issue every which way I can and I still don't have a specific cause. The link you provided doesn't show one that I can find; there are some folks who hear a pop and the screen goes out - but stays out. In my case, the screen goes black for a second or two then comes back.

I think Gump's in the right area on this. I feel sure it's a high voltage issue, perhaps an arcing of some kind. The "crack" sound has a lot of power behind it, like a high-voltage circuit breaker slamming shut. But strangely, I cannot find an issue via Google that is exactly what we're experiencing, and which I could suggest to Vizio when I call them again.

In the old days, you're symptom would suggest a bad flyback transformer. I don't know if today's sets use them. It certainly sounds like a power supply issue.
