i stopped smoking in october 2008 because i had a bad bronchitis.

i first stopped smoking 2 weeks during my sickness and after that i tried to stop it completely.

my help was brotrinde (stupid non-smokers!!!) and chewing gum.. it took a while but i'm "clean" now Smile

after some month i tried a cig again, just to see if i still like it.. and guess what? i puked!! lol

if you miss the chewing, try some chewing gum. better than eating all the time. you need something that distracts you from it.

it all comes back to self control. If you want to break the addiction, use less and less each time you do it, then you should find a healthy substitute for it to keep you occupied.

If you want to quit, that is the most important thing.  You have to have the desire.  That being said, there are ways to help yourself.  I was a longtime dipper - picked the habit up while in the military.  I quit last October, right before hunting season.  This was doubly difficult because sitting all day in a tree stand and not dipping was very challenging.  That being said, I couldn't just run to the store either. :)  In any case, I got this mint snuff substitute.  The one thing about dipping is that you are used to having the dip in your mouth and there is a psychological component to it.  The mint snuff (tobacco free) got me over the hump.  I combined that with two weeks of patches to keep that really bad nic fits away, and that was that.

Lastly, I scheduled a dentist appointment and got a thorough cleaning as a sort of "new me" kind of thing.

One last thing - the cravings get shorter and further apart the longer you go without.   For the 10 seconds to 5 minutes that the craving lasts, find something else to occupy your mind.  I did push-ups. :o

.

I smoked for 30yrs and quit 8 months ago cold turkey.  For me it was the money and nothing else.  Here in Canada booze and smokes are heavily taxed....70 bucks a carton for mid grade smokes. I still want to smoke but the cravings are like once a week now not every hour.

Drink lots and lots of water.  Anytime you want to detoxify the body you need the water to flush your system.  Tell your friends and loved ones that they need to be patient with you...if not you'll FUCKIN KILL THEM!!!!!!Yell

I dipped Copenhagen for close to 20 years and quit over a year ago.  I did the Chantix thing through my doctor and also did the nicotine gum.  I needed something to chew.  With the nicotine gum, it comes in 2 strengths - 2mg and 4 mg.  I would chew 2 of the 4 mg pieces.  Dip has more nicotine thatn cigarettes, so I needed more.  Then I started cutting back on the gum and then finally switched to regular gum and always had gum available for when I wanted to chew on something.  That worked pretty well for me.  I had tried ot quit before, but never had any luck.  The biggest part is that you have to WANT to do it.  You can't just decide to try and quit and still want to do it.  I still miss it, but hell, it was a nasty habit anyway.

Well just think, the alternative is to go to the hospital for cancer treatment, have Chemo and radiation, possibly have your tounge cut out, maybe even loose all your teeth and gums, perhaps even have holes in your lips and cheeks.

By the time you get out you will have been off chew for a month or two, because it is not allowed in the hospital, and the habit may be broken.

The alternative is to stop now and not use all of the future hospital stay to break the habit.
