    Hello,
I guess I’m supposed to introduce myself so I can finally be part of your online gang ? so let me start with a little history.
Because of my family’s history I will not use any names in this short autobiography.  My mother and father met in Daugavpils, Latvia at University in 1955.  My father was one of the youngest Physics professors at University and my mother was a graduate student.  After some reluctance on my father’s part they began seeing each other and married in 1960.   I was born in Kuldīga, Latvia in June of 1965.  We moved to Ventspils , Latvia in 1966 because my mother began working for the Soviet Irbene Locator, which was in charge of spying on NATO countries’ communications.  She was head of the cryptology section and focused on European countries.  After two years we moved to Skrunda , Latvia to be closer to my father and where my mother began working at the Skrunda Radar Station.  The radar stations main task was to control the cosmic space over Western Europe and North America, and to “intercept” ballistic missiles should any be fired at the Soviet Union.
My father, who took a position in the Science and Engineering school at Liepāja University in 1961 would stay in Liepāja for weeks at a time.  However, what he was really doing was working for the KGB.  He was in charge of moving and tracking so called “immigrants” across the Baltic Sea to Sweden.  The so called “immigrants” were actually western trained KGB intelligence agents who actively infiltrated European countries and even the United States for espionage and other spy craft.  You could say he was a spy master.
Because my father was a physics professor he was well suited to oversee the development of devices and techniques employed in KGB spy craft.  One such device was a sound wave generator that would send sound pulses which were beyond human hearing and could make someone ill in order to force them from a their location.  For example, if an agent wanted to infiltrate a room to search for information he could make the occupants ill whereby forcing them to leave the location to seek treatment and allow the agent unfettered access to materials and documents.  This device is still in use today as far as I know.
Disenchanted with soviet rule and the failed promise of socialism, in 1980 my father and mother contacted the CIA to make a deal to get them out of Latvia.  The CIA required they work as double agents to gain access to a top secret list of agents that my father had access to.  This lasted for about a year when we were able to finally take a fishing boat in the dead of night from the port of Liepāja to Gedser, Denmark.  We couldn’t go to Stockholm because there were too many Soviets that would recognize my father and the intelligence apparatus would pick up on our movements.   We then made our way to Kolding, Denmark and after several days we made it to London, England.   We stayed in London for a few months where we obtained new identities and passports. Finally, we flew to the United States and settled in Temperance, Michigan where I graduated in 1983.
Now if you read all this and wondered if this story would make a great novel, maybe it would but it’s all bull shit!  I just took 5 minutes of your time that you’ll never get back…Happy Holidays!  Please don’t tell anyone and just encourage them to read it too. ?

JoeCamel reacted to WldPenguin in Not going to XI Fest because you think you can't afford it?
As soon as we say we "can't" do something, we're right......we can't.  Because we've already shut our minds to the possibilities before we even entertain the what-if's or the how-to's.  Instead of saying "I can't afford to go", why not change that to "How can I afford to go"?  This will open your mind up to many ideas that you wouldn't ever think about as soon as you said "can't".  And this little "trick" works for many situations in life.
If XI Fest is something you'd like to attend but you think you can't because of finances, please read on:
So, over the next week or so, I'm going to share some ideas and tips that you can use to plan on attending XI Fest this year, either Euro or USA, and these same ideas and tips can be applied to other things you'd like to plan, save for, and experience in the future.
But, before you know the tips and tricks of saving for a specific event, you first have to know your budget.  How much is this trip going to cost?  Without knowing that, you won't have a clear idea of exactly how much you'll need to set aside.  A trip budget, as for anything else, can help keep you from overspending, while making sure you get to do the things you really want to do.
Before I go any further, I'll say this.....even if you're just thinking about going, not sure about going, or would really like to go but aren't sure how you'll get there financially, then I suggest you first ask to be added to the PM regarding all of the XI Fest details for the US Fest, or check out and follow the posts regarding the Euro Fest.  Information is being provided and discussed regarding hotel costs, things to do, etc., so you can get a better idea of how much money you'll need.  Then determine how you'll get there.  Will you need to fly, drive, carpool with someone that's along your route so you can share travel expenses?  At which hotel will you choose to stay?  Or do you live close enough that you won't need lodging?  Can you share a room with other XI members in order to save on the hotel bill?  Those are your two largest costs, and should be determined as closely to their actual costs as possible when planning.  Then you can figure out how much you'll need for food, activities, souvenirs, etc.
Once you have this ballpark dollar amount, divide it by the number of months that are left until the XI Fest.  The Euro Fest is a bit sooner than the US Fest, but it's still possible if you set your mind to it.  If you need help with your budget, let me know.  I also have a great trip budgeting calculator that I can share with you.
So, for example, let's say you've determined you need $1,000 for your trip to XI Fest.  With 5 months left until the US Fest in September, that comes out to $200 per month.  That might sound like a lot, so break it down even further.  There's 20 weeks left until the fest, so that's $50 a week or $7 a day.  That seems more manageable and attainable when you break it down like that.  That $7 a day could be foregoing your Starbucks fix, or not ordering pizza for the third time this week  Little things can add up to a lot over time.
Another great idea to consider once you know how much you will need to save is to open up a bank account specifically for your trip, or whatever else you are saving for.  Make sure you tell your bank you don't want a debit card for the account.  This will make it more difficult to "borrow" money from it in a moment of weakness.  Faithfully put the money in each week or month, and don't skip a deposit and tell yourself you'll make it up the next time.  We usually don't end up making it up for whatever reason, and then we're behind with our plan.  Also, the physical act of moving or depositing the money into a vacation or special fund is a good mental exercise in keeping the funds separate from your general sources of money.
Thanks for reading, and please stay tuned for other tips and ideas for saving for your trip or other specific goal that you may have

JoeCamel got a reaction from ANGU5 in No video to 4K TV after windows loads
Here are some possible reasons and solution.  I think your TV or video card only supports 30Hz signal input refresh for higher resolutions and it is possible that your video card may be detecting the TV but trying to feed a 60Hz signal (I know it probably advertises 240Hz but that is the video processor on board TV).  Best bet is to hook a normal monitor to the DVI port and the TV to HDMI so that you can see the video settings on the monitor.  Once you access the video settings you can adjust the Refresh down 30Hz or adjust the resolution to HD which I believe will work at 60Hz on your TV.  Also, make sure you have HDMI cables that are rated for high resolution.  I have heard that less than v2.0 HDMI cable can have issues.

The reason you can see in Safe mode is that your video is forced to 800X600 60Hz which the TV can handle.  Good luck.

I found the map.  I downloaded it and am going to test it.  Great map for multiple play types, FT, CTF, TDM, DM etc...  I think it will need to be modified for FT.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this but hopefully so.  I played a map a while back called Project Valhalla (MP-pval) and it was a nice map that I though would make a good FT map.  Has XI ever played that map in FT and would anyone consider it if not.  Just a thought...
