Traffic Shaping and Bandwidth Capping in the uk

Recommended Posts

Posted

Talktalk have recently started to offer "free"

broadband with one of their

phone packages.

What they do not make clear, however, when you are signing up for their 18

month contract, is that certain ports are either blocked entirely or

restricted.

For gamers, this means that Steam - the most popular online game content

delivery system in the world - doesn't work.

It also means you can't use bittorrent etc.

They advertise themselves as "gaming friendly" and proceed to disable

the

most popular single player games (Half Life, Half Life 2) and the most

popular multi player games (Counter Strike, Day of Defeat etc.).

The games may work if your Steam account is up to date, but Steam cannot

update and so, if you use Steam then it *will* stop working with Talktalk.

Moral: you get what you pay for and anyone interested in using their PC for

games or (legal) file sharing should not use Talktalk.

I am contacting trading standards next week re: their "gamerfriendly" false

claims.

There are several ISPs which block ports required for the proper operation of Steam and Steam games:

  • 012.net (Steam traffic blocked)
  • Bluewin (Firewall blocks Steam from provider side - must be disabled through provider's service portal)
  • Dutch Telecom (Steam traffic blocked)
  • ISPFree (Steam traffic blocked)
  • Micronet Broadband (Steam traffic blocked)
  • TalkTalk (bandwidth throttling reduces download speeds)

There are connection issues with certain ISPs that can be avoided depending on what type of cable/DSL modem and router you have.

For all its faults, PlusNet (www.plus.net), an independent subsidiary of British Telecom, is transparent about its services and tells potential users what they can expect from their packages.  The description of an Internet connection as "up to 8 Meg" or "up to 20 Meg" is simplistic.  Depending on the time of day, it is likely that many services will be throttled back.  Fortunately, if one chooses the right package, this does not include gaming or streaming which are provided at "line speed" 24/7.

Having had to deal with TalkTalk to get a disabled relative's line fixed, I can't say that I would ever consider signing up with them, personally...
