Call of duty has been around for many years and some people don’t know the history of this game series so here it is in short..

Call of Duty

Released in October 2003, developed by infinity ward and published by Activision, it was based on the famed Quake 3 engine(Developed by ID.. they were pioneers in the industry with first person game shooters  such as Doom and Quake) Activision was the company that put out the First Call of Duty(Although Acvtivision is an American company it is  majority owned by French conglomerate Vivendi SA)  The game was a WWII based following American, British paratroopers and the Red army.

The Original Call of duty was made for OS’s such as PC, Mac OS X, Nokia for N-Gage

Call of Duty 2

Released in October 2005 for the PC, November 2005 for the Xbox 360, November  2006 for the Mac OS X, It was another WWII game following US, British, and Red Army.  It was again developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision, Other version were made for mobile phones, Pocket Pc’s and Smartphone’s

Call of Duty 3

Released in November  2006, Call of Duty 3 was the first game not developed by Infinity Ward, it was developed by Treyarch, it also caused quite an uproar as it was released only for console for Playstation2, Wii, Xbox, and Xbox360.  This was the time when PC VS Console battle lines were being drawn.  Companies were preparing their future for either Console or PC.. and most thought the wave of the future was console.  It also was the time when the Console battle was heating up between Xbox and Play station, and to some degree Wii

Call of Duty 4 – Modern Warfare

Call of Duty 4 was developed once again by Infinity Ward and published by Activision; It was released in November 2007 for PC, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 3, And Xbox 360.  It was the first game not set in WWII.  It also was the first Call of duty to receive a mature game rating,  The Nintendo DS version received a Teen rating.   The Mac OS X version was released in September 2008.  This version of Call of duty was very successful, even today it is still one of XI’s bigger draws to our servers, our freeze tag servers are always busy.  COD4 was highly modable(I just made that up.. don’t know if it’s a real word lol) but we have complete control of maps and the way the game is played on dedicated servers.. This is one of the big draws to this particular version of the game.. you’re not paying steam $14.99 every 3 months for new maps.

Call of Duty 5 – World at War

Released in November 2008 it was another WWII based game only this time it was Pacific theater and Eastern Front based.  It was developed by Treyarch,  This is the first call of duty games where people were finding out that new games and new graphics capabilities were at a cost.  I myself had to upgrade in order to play this game, Video Card choice became very important now, raw motherboard CPU power was not enough, COD5 while sales were ok I don’t think they were what was desired in the end.  There were bug problems in the game in the beginning, as well on console there was stiff challenges from  Gears of War, and of course.. the boom of Guitar hero and rock band..

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Released in November 2009 Developed by Infinity Ward and Published by Activision this would become the game that defined how game releases would be measured.  In pure sales this game blew away every major entertainment release to that date,  It broke every game, and Box office release record  worldwide with sales of $550 million in the first 5 days.  It was released for PC, Xbox360, and Play station 3

"Call Of Duty has become one of the greatest entertainment franchises of all time," said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard. “If you consider the number of hours our audiences are engaged in playing Call Of Duty games, it is likely to be one of the most viewed of all entertainment experiences in modern history."

Despite this remarkable sales numbers and popularity, there was an offended PC group arising, the fact that you had to have Steam for the game, and there was not dedicated servers.  MW2 also brought out the worst in players, with no dedicated servers Hackers were on the rise.

But we can’t ignore it was a good game, the graphics were great, and I played a lot of hours with XI members on this game.

There was also another casualty of this game, and that was the family of XI, as a group we were split a bit on this game as some of us played it and loved it, others resented the non-dedicated server style, and stayed away, others did not go to this game as the upgrade to a bigger PC and better video cards were needed.  So during this time there was about 20-30 of us that played regularly together, and I seemed to lose touch with the rest of XI to some degree.

Call of Duty: Black Ops

Released in November 2010, developed by Treyarch and published by Activision,  Again a winning combination as far as sales goes, The first 24 Hours  alone topped $360 Million, with $650 Million of sales in the first 5 days, topping the $550  MW2 record.  At the 42 day mark it topped $1 Billion in sales.  Released on November 9th 2010 and by December 22, 2010..  there was 600 Million Hours of logged Black Ops time.

It was released for the PC, Xbox 360, and Play station 3, as well as Nintendo Wii, and DS,  It was slated to be the messiah of the FPS games and Call of Duty Franchise.  It was going to make all the COD people happy, and was eagerly awaited.  It would have dedicated servers.. none of that steam shit anymore!! , It would have great graphics..And could do mods, New guns.. you could fly helicopters..  All this was true… mmmm Kinda….  Yes they had dedicated servers.. but not like our(XI) dedicated servers.. we had to now rent servers from one particular game server.. and you were very limited in what you could do..  Then people found out.. you got to have steam too.. WTF!!! Not another MW2 !!! but yes you needed to be on steam to play Black Ops,  The Mod tools haven’t surfaced yet, so no one really knows.  I hear it will be in May sometime.. Still not sure though.. Will we for instance be able to set up  a Black Ops Freeze tag server??  Unsure.. And if so will it be un ranked, or ranked..  some of us play with a goal in mind and that is to get the prestige’s and the levels and the challenges..In my opinion I don’t think they will let homemade mods and levels get to the level of COD4.  They want that $14.99 every 3 months for new maps.

Black Ops also had a rough beginning, connection problems plagued the game in the beginning,  Glitches and bugs were frustrating players as well.  Like most new things though it has sorted itself out.. numerous patches along the way have helped, and it was a learning curve.

Black Ops runs on an enhanced World at War engine, which is an enhanced Call of Duty 4 Engine,  It also incorporates a streaming technology from the Call of Duty MW2 game

For Black Ops, Treyarch focused only on this game unlike past practice. However, it had different teams, each working on separate game modes.Treyarch used a motion capture technology similar to the one used in James Cameron's film Avatar, which allows accurate facial expressions, capturing the whole performance of the actor. The studio also consulted special forces veterans from both belligerents of the Cold War: Major John Plaster (US Army-Ret.) who served in the MACV-SOG during the Vietnam War, and former Soviet special forces operative Sonny Puzikas. The latter taught Treyarch how Spetsnaz soldiers would react in combat, such as rolling out of the line of fire. Spetsnaz AIs in the game have been modeled after him, from his tactics and his movements to his face. Although having a historical background, the classified aspect of these Cold War black operations allowed the studio to create its own fictional story.(Taken from Wikepdia)

One interesting fact.. the Rolling stones song “Gimmie Shelter”(Initially released in 1970) which was played heavily in the Game trailers  Sparked sales of the song with 2000 begin sold the week of the trailer release, 5000 copies the week after, and 11,000 the week after that.

The Game did generate some controversy and Protest.  Cuba condemned the game saying it has Special Forces trying to kill a young Fidel Castro but failing..Hmmm wasn’t that what happened??

Adam Biessener(Author:Game Informer) questioned events depicted in the single-player campaign stating that they push "the lines of good taste” Specifically noted was the scene depicting the torture of a restrained prisoner.

Germany was expected to ban uncensored version, and there was a move to ban it in the US as well that didn’t go very far.

As far as Black Ops goes I love this game, I play it %95 of the time..(got to leave %5 for porn!!LOL)  I have a goal to get to the end of all the prestige’s, and all the levels.. I never done that before in a game.

One big positive for the Black ops game.. it seemed to bring the call of duty XI community back together, I met and played with people I never knew before, some I have become very good online friends.. and really enjoy the chat and friendly badgering..

What’s on the Horizon

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

It was slated to be released in November  2011.  Activision has been in an ongoing legal battle with co-executives of Infinity Ward.  There was a coup by the developers and many walked away from Infinity Ward, how much effect this has on the release date is not sure yet.  We will see in November.

Battlefield 3

I have to talk a little about this as it seems to be the game of the futre in some circles.  Supposed to be released in Fall of 2011 for PC,Xbox 360, and Play Station 3.  From what I have read it will offer some amazing abilities for the player, flying jets, helicopters, driving vehicles, etc.   I just hope the legacy of Battlefield Bad Company 2 doesn’t happen. BF BC2 was released right when the furor of MW2 and no dedicated serves happened.  Many people turned to BC2, but something happened.  It seemed to fizzle, and just go away; some people blamed no new maps, no mod tools released as promised, bugs in the game, glitches etc.  I stopped playing it as my friends and fellow Xi members stopped playing it.

Well al this is just a short rant/history and information on Call of Duty that some of you may have not know and find interesting, hope you got something out of it.

Been playing since the start! And what I noticed missing and should be mentioned is between COD1 and COD2 was a GREAT expansion pack to COD1 call United Offensive. We played this for a LONG time at work on our server and was great fun since it was when tanks, jeeps, armored trucks, bazookas and satchels were first introduced. COD2 fell down when it came out since it did NOT include these nice features in the multiplayer version (only in the single player). Fortunately, World at War brought back some of this later in some maps.
