i recently downloaded an mp3 program and stupidly left the quick install checked. It made bing my homepage. After one day running it all of a sudden i get this error message

0xC004D401

an unauthorized change was made to your license

to keep your system stable you must go online and validate that your software is genuine

now, i got  rid of it but the point is that after i got this message, my control panel would not come up at all. WHen i accessed it through "my computer" it had everything there but the internet options icon, making it hard to change my homepage. Then i read up online about how hard it is to get rid of bing. Now, i'm an idiot, of that there is no doubt, but i'm kinda scared of microsoft's intent with this "bing". It seemed to me to be an odd coincidence, especially the circumstances after making it my homepage as a condition (optional except for the retarded or impatient)of a program download. I have reloaded the program, as an IT guy I work with says he has never had trouble like this, so i'll give it another go, without bing attached and see what happens. As long as I can system restore and play my damn game i think i'll be alright. Thx for listening to my rant!!!!YellYellYell

I would make sure the installer wasn't infected.  Do a full scan with Malwarebytes and Super Antispyware (free versions).  I've seen a couple computers that the control panel / task manager was disabled after infection.  Try and get ur installers from cnet (theyre clean).  I've seen bing toolbars / homepage installed several times without issues...not that i love it.  You could also browse with firefox if ur internet explorer is acting strange.

just a follow up, i think that bing was the cuplrit...when i did the first download i did the malwarebytes scan and avast, just to be safe. The second go round...after my system restore...my mp3 program runs just fine, no bing attached, no weird security message. Personally, i think microsoft is up to somethigng, just like EA games was when they released spore. For those who don't know Spore would load and atytach a hidden driver(trojan horse) or whatever you wanna call it. It made your computer only capable of running EA games after download. I read numerous complaints about it. If it was untrue, it was untrue in a lot of posts. My bet is microsoft is trying the same thing with bing, as if they dont have enough marketshare already.....Yell

I had a problem with Vista, It clamed that I was using a bad copy, then the only thing that worked was my broswer ( no desk top) and it had a help box. you clicked on the box you had two choices 1. to buy the operating system 2. to report my copy!!!

After an hour on the phone with a microsoft tech, the only way I could resolve the issue was to remove the 3rd party anti-virus I was running ( by the way this was a microsoft partners software) and install microsoft's

this all happened after a windows update on re-boot.....hmmmm
