Hey I recieved my new CPU yesterday, an AMD Phenom II X4. Now before I purchased it, I made sure my mobo was compatible. I made sure the socket was good, the website said I could upgrade to an AMD Phenom II no problem, I had the update for my BIOS, everything. But, when I installed it, I had my dad help me (he's pretty good with computers) so it was done correctly, everything checked out. But when the computer is powered on, nothing. No beep, no motherboard info page, nothing. The computer was on, all fans were working, but my monitor stayed black. Does anyone have an idea of what to do.. Or am I just S.O.L until I get another $120 to waste?

Did you plug the cpu power back in . Plus these guys not like me because I can guess better then they can need the make and model of said setup . If your board has onboard video and your using a video card it's possible that the bios update reset your machine back to onboard video thus giving you the black screen and no beed code errors. To check just plug the monitor into the onboard video.

  Good luck

I don't know your particular Motherboard, But check all your connections , 20 or 24 pin cable , plus the 4 or 6 pin cable, And if your Video card takes a power check that , What I mean by check is unplug them and plug them back in, If that doesn't do it,,Then just plug the bar necessities in to try get it to boot, Like Motherboard, video card 1 stick of ram, just to see if you can boot to the Bios, If that doesn't do it take the CPU out and check for bent pins,

It also could be the power supply ,And if it's not any of these ,it probably incompatible..Also check that the monitor is correctly plugged in .

Post your specs (part numbers)

Obviously you could not get to the bios update part correct, or did you do the update and then nothing?

Its an ASUS M3N78-EM mobo.. it worked with the stock cpu on it, but it needed a bios update. we got it, updated the bios off a flash drive, and then put the new cpu on. the furthest we got w/the new cpu was the motherboard info screen (says del for info or w/e idr the exact wording) that was with 1 gb of ram. we couldnt hit  any key because the keyboard was not responding. and im using an onboard graphcis card because my original motherboard fried.. this ASUS was one that was lying around. also are there any "homemade" substitutions for thermal paste? i want to put my old cpu back in but i dont have an thermal paste, i used the therrmal pad on it and that is no good anymore

I hope you didn't build it all in the case already.

My thoughts would be to take it all on the table (motherboard a bit higher) hook it on and turn it on and wait. By that turn it off and take off the cooler and check if the CPU was getting warm or not.

After the flash I assume you have done the CMOS reset?

Also make sure the ram is seated properly.  When not just right, it can just sit blank screen, with no response.  Make sure the CPU socket is secured (whether its the lever bar or screw style).  You may have to order some thermal paste.  I usually use arctic silver 5.  I don't know of any homemade substance (that would make me nervous about temps).  If ur using a usb keyboard, do you have a ps2 type...sometimes those respond when the usb type don't yet.  I see it has a ps2 connector.

Also, that is a AM2 or AM2+ phenom processor, like your socket, right?  not an AM3? Just making sure.

I agree you should be able to set the jumper to reset the bios.

If nothing else put the old cpu in and go into the bios and set it to show the diagnostic screen and not dell when it boots.

Its an AM3 cpu, but i was told an AM3 is compatible with AM2 slots. Also we did try a PS2 keyboard but that did not work as well. I'm just going to put my old cpu in once i get some thermal paste and just use that for the time being.

dollardogg

get on ts

THAT! is always an option :)

But, leaves me still with a few questions/options:

1. What BIOS did you use with what number?

2. You can run the cpu plus motherboard with coolerpaste. It just helps 10 Celcius or so to have it cooler, max!

3. Is the CPU getting warm after booting it up?

4. Did you clear CMOS to by the jumper? Not by loading up in the BIOS as factory settings, but a full reset/clear by those pins on your motherboard.

Those for now :)

I agree with X-Ray as far as resetting the CMOS, I flashed my bios for a cpu upgrade also and had the same problem until I reset the CMOS

Ill try to get on ts later.

ray:

i used this site, found my CPU on the list, and got the BIOS off that http://uk.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM2Plus/M3N78EM/#CPUS

I dont recall it being hot after booting it up, but I didnt leave it on for long..

and I did use the pins to reset the CMOS, I also tried pulling the little button battery out.. nothing seemed to work....

maybe im forgetting to plug something in idk.. but the CPU was put into the slot correctly, and I plugged the fan in but thats all I did in installation

All I am thinking is that you have to test it with another PowerSupply and check the CPU (warm or not).

/EDIT:  "the furthest we got w/the new cpu was the motherboard info screen (says del for info or w/e idr the exact wording"  and no more? You had screeny right after the flash??

That doesn't really help if the PSU you have now is ok though. Just testing and maybe a local shop an idea?

Been talking to Dollardogg to think of things :)

i believe the power supply works with the CPU.. but im not 100% sure as im not too great with computers. if it is the power supply and i need to move up, itll have to wait a month or so for my birthday so I can purchase a new one so im kinda hoping its not that

That is why you need to go to the local store or find one. They may charge you for 10 bucks for a test, but that isn't 10% that you have invested in. Just weird that it booted up and no longer. I wished that we all at >XI< lived in one big building to help out one of the other hehe

You have to nail down and have the basics up. Switch arround with the onboard video. Do you have a cd with that motherboard?

I hope it works out for you buddy.

How about removing the CPU just to check if any of the pins are bent, there are a lot of them and it may have been possible that one of them is bent, look real close, ya never know.Foot in mouth

Im actually thinking it might be a motherboard issue now.. the plugs in the back for the keyboard, usb and ps2, and the monitor plug-in arent working.. ive tried every angle of this and nothing is working, ive checked for bent pins, on both CPUs new and old, made sure the BIOS was compatible, cleared CMOS, etc. its the only thing i can guess about this.

Wow ya having fun yet ? A couple of things here. You said the first time you tried the setup out you got to the boot screen then all went dark no beeps. and in your last post you mentioned you could check out your bios # so you must still get to the bios screen ?

Next would be the cpu and bios list is fron the uk and your profile Say's your in the states . The UK bios and the USA bios will be different Not really sure but I think really different.  Your MB is for the US .

As for thermal paste as long as you can spread the paste evenly across the cooler it will work for you . I just wouldn't stress test the machine. If the CPU gets too hot it will auto turn itself off before any damage is done thats built into every system. So you can try your old CPU, You would have to reset your BIOS to factory spec first. Try that out with a ps2 keyboard.

Go get a live version of Ubunto to test this next part out. http://www.ubuntu.com/ burn it to a DVD. Now here's what I think is going on. If you got to the bios post your machine is working. What its not doing is reading something. A computer starts in the same way always. Hit the on switch power supply goes weeeee next is the ROM bios it checks to see what starting and goes OK we have this stuff to start in this order. so it would look to see what you have then the boot order then the OS. If your Bios is screwy it won't do that. Thats why you have the ability to reset the bios right of the MB Pull the battery and let it sit for a while couple of hours there's a ton of opion about that. I don't know how long it takes for the Capacitors to drain. That resets to factory specs. So does the pin method I'm just lazy :)  . Replace your old cpu in the system making sure you spread what paste you have left evenly (BTW this stuff only 6 bucks for a life times worth ) Try it out when you get to the bios post hit del to get in and make sure the boot order  is cd or dvd first then Hd save. If it starts but goes to black screen again insert the Ubuntu disk a windows disk would work just as well too but ubunto seems to do this better. restart your computer and let it boot off the dvd. If it starts then you have a software problem on your HD if it doesn't then its going to be a HArdware issue. Not as indepth as this should be but fron what I've read your smart enough to do this. Test it out let us know. We do love a good mystery I'm sure half the geeks in here are tell ing them selves something about this :)

Ok I got here a little late, how many sticks of ram you have, if you have 2 take them and put them on sep channels.

Because of the way the AM3 chip uses the memory through its controler you can't have booth sticks in the same bank, it will not boot and you will not get any bios beeps.

Your best bet is to start with one stick a ram to start with.

If you have 4 slots on your board you will not be able to use 2 of them
