Shamu mate you need more coolimg... is there space in your case to add more fans....Fans cost very little and what you are aiming for is a good circulation through the comp idealy from front intake to back exhaust and if you can fit an exhaust fan in the top of your case thats even better....

Can you post a pic of your case mate to give us a better idea also if you can safely cable tie all cables back out of the way that helps air move better through your comp

Just an idea mate but this is what I started with years ago its a brilliant book......

It will give you a bit more confidance doing things your self and a great insight in to how it all works

What is the video card temp when it crashes?

Video about 130F, GPU about 100F, they are max temps attained using HWMonitor.

In talking with the PC builders and others the temps are not high enough to cause a shutdown like I am having.

I have also tried with a 12" electric fan blowing into the open side of the case, no help at all.

Today I did a system restore and got rid of a few Windows updates. My video card is updated and current with the exception of an available Beta update that I had previously had downloaded while the tech guy ran my PC trying to find the problem.

What is interesting is that the beta version from NVIDIA now cannot be installed because of a now deleted Windows update. Perhaps that is telling me that my problem may have been a conflict with the now deleted Windows update and NVIDIA drivers.

Played a game this morning without crashing the PC.

Book is ordered, education never hurts....... too bad I did not learn that concept in grade school.

One of these days I may learn to understand Celsius and the metric system.

Also it appears temperature was never the problem. Never got high temps at any time.

Of course I could never figure out the Dewey Decimal System either and that was taught to me.

Well the latest and not so greatest.

I am on the road with my laptop with which I have gamed frequently. I transferred my player profiles to the laptop so my -Shamu character is current.

Now my laptop is turning completely off in game. Previously I did a reinstall of  COD WAW on my home PC but had saved my profiles. It still shuts down all but the fans.

My laptop shuts of completely and disengages me from the hotel network connection. I went to Local Apps and deleted the players from the folder but somehow they still come up when I open the game and the laptop still powers off.

Gonna try COD4 at sometime and see if I have issues there.

I am so damn confused.

I am running a complete scan with Malwarebytes to see if anything is found.

Nothing found by Mawarebytes.

Who's Dewey Decimal and why does he have a system ?

Dear Shamu I have no idea :(  From  all you have done we now know its not a heat issue with your video card or the cpu. We also know its not a video driver issue. And from it now happing on your laptop we know it's something to do with your profile. What I do not know. So here's another test for you. I'm going to ask you to create a new user profile on your computer and one for your game. Here's how to do it.

For the computer. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/create-new-user-account-in-windows-vista-7/ Once you create your new account log onto your computer using that account. And fire up the game and make a new account there.

New profile for the game.  open the game select "Select online profile" to create a new profile make it different by a long shot. You can delete it after the test. Click new and enter the name you choose. Click ok then select it and click ok. Thats close I think . close your game fire it up again go to select online profile and select the new profile and try that one out. Leave all your settings as stock for now. Let us know if that works for you. I have to admit though if your profiles the problem I do not know or have a clue how to fix it. I'd only be able to tell you its what causing your problems. :( . Does anybody or has anybody ever fixed a profile anybody got a clue ??

I will try LAbobs info after I get home and have time.

I have created a new player in my profile and it too powered off the laptop.

I will try COD4 to see if I have issues there.

I will also set it to run in compatibility with XP and Vista to see if it might be a win 7 issue.

But right now I have to do some work and may not have time to tinker until Friday.

Damm Sham my bucket may not be deep enough. So I have 2 more ideas for you one is to play in windowed mode to see if you don't have an error poping up you can't see. Here's how to do that.

Open console with tilde key (~)Type /r_fullscreen 0HIT ENTERType /vid_restart

To change back you replace the 0 with a 1 and it will go back full screen. Then just play the game and see what happens. The other is a shoot in the dark. I wonder if you don't have a sticky key turned on to turn off your screen or computer. This is as good as any tosee if there on or off I guess. http://www.ofzenandcomputing.com/zanswers/2527/. I have to say you atleast have one of the most interesting problems I've seen in a long time.

At this point I have tried compatibility with VISTA and got through one map but again shutdown. Game would not load with XP. I have also run the game as Administrator, still shuts down PC.

I have done a system restore but cannot get back as far as I would like. Tee option for selecting more restore points does not let you go back as far as you used to be able to do, I can only go back about 3 weeks.

I have deleted all files and folders from my player profiles and started from scratch. I created and entirely new profile, Still shuts of laptop.

I have googled the issue, see nothing. I have run complete scans with Windows Defender and Malware Bytes.

Somehow I think it is a update issue because I have the same issue on my home PC and now this laptop. Only shuts down PC in game.

Now I am even thinking dirty pool by a spyware program I did not renew. I was running PC Tools Spyware Doctor on my PC's. Let it expire in late December. Deleted it from my home PC and on this laptop the program is here but expired. Could they be getting revenge on me for not renewing?

Did I mention I also deleted and reinstalled the whole game and patches? I just think it is not game or hardware related but probably some update or something like that. I will be on my home PC later today.

Very discouraging issue. If I have to I will ship my PC to the builder and wee if they can find anything.

You said earlier in your posts that your power supply was 750 watt. What brand is it?The gtx295 requires a minimum of 680 watts. The 750 watt might have been just enough when new but as it has aged it may no longer be supplying the card with enough power. If it's a no name brand I would suspect a power issue even more. This would also assume that you are having 2 separate issues between your desktop and your laptop.

At this point I an almost sure it's an update issue.

I just did another system restore on my PC and got through a map without a crash.

I am almost convinced it is not hardware, game or heat related. Simply too coincidental with my laptop now doing the same thing and I had not gamed on the for weeks until this business trip.

One problem I am having is perhaps my own ignorance, I can't get System Restore to go back as far as I like even by selecting "more restore points". I used to get a calendar from which I could select a date, it's not that way anymore. It gives you a few dates but only goes back about 3-4 weeks of options.

Shamu,

I know you tried Malwarebytes, but it is not the compete package. It is for malware. I would also suggest you go here:

http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

I know you have to register to use the virus removal tool, but it is free, and if you uncheck the send me emails they won't bother you. It is over 100 meg, but it is top notch and very complete. I would try that before you do much else. With both machines acting weird seems like a virus you got on both machines. Hey its free, and I'm an idiot!

Once you download and run the scanner it will ask you if you are finished, click yes and then remove the downloaded file and it you won't have it on your machine anymore.

Yes, but it does not give you many. Before there was a calendar thingy and you could go further back.

However...........I have played a few maps and have not crashed of late. Bedtime now, did a bit of driving today, tired.

 Rather than just blindly guessing....

Download and run hijackthis and post a report here so we can see. DO NOT attempt to use the program to delete anything, it's more of an expert type of tool. The log file is VERY helpful to us computer guys to figure out if you have a software/malware/virus problem. Also, if this is a virus, it will infect the system restore points so it will do no good to restore. I suspect if the problem went away after a restore, you don't have a virus.

To eliminate power as the issue, disable SLI in the Nvidia control panel and try the game and see if it crashes

Post a hijackthis log and you should also check out the Windows event viewer (system) for any clues.

Right now things are not too bad. I am not going to look at any more hardware or virus issues because I do not think they apply.

Most progress was made with system restore so who knows what had been buggered.

Doing stuff with SLI and Windows Event viewer are things about which I have no idea.

For now, status quo.

I think there was another post in the forums where the game went funny on a player and my guess was a bad MS update so it just may be. Albit kinda funny to have an update go funny on 2 pc's from the same person at the same time. I don't see it being the game itself because you did a reload on one pc and not on the other and  both had the problem. An update would of been done on both pc's and more then likely a windows update because of the different hardware you have on the two pc's i t would be strange to be a driver update. Anyway sounds like your getting it under control.

The saga continues............

As some recall my PC shuts down leaving only the fans running and if something had been said in game voice it kept repeating itself. I would have to hard power it off and restart.

Lately it has not been crashing as often and I thought System Restore helped.

Well, tonight it shut off and I mean SHUT OFF, everything including the fans this time and will not restart. I pulled the power cord for about 10 min to no avail.

But I take this as a good sign because I suspect the culprit has revealed itself. I think it is the power supply as the root cause of all my problems. I will get a new power supply tomorrow but do not know if I have enough smarts to install one. If not my son will do it for me next week.

I am rather confident that the power supply has been the cause of my unusual issues, at least I sure hope so.

In reading the above post you can see I am relatively confident my problems were power supply caused.

I have bought a Rocketfish 900W:

http://www.rocketfishproducts.com/products/computer-accessories/RF-900WPS.html

I thought I might do it myself but after looking at the insides I have ruled that out. Did not shop for price and simply went to Best Buy and bought it. Now just to figure out when I can get it installed. My bad luck that my son who works on PC's for Siemens is out of town this week.

I may just take it to Best Buy and have them put it in.

I will be sorely disappointed if after it is installed it does not fire back up. Undecided

shamu if you look up a computer buying guide on google there are many of them they have pictures on how to assemble a computer some are even so detailed they even show you exactly where each psu connection goes. but for the most part each connection should be labled on the connection itself and the mother board is labled too just match pretty. i have to remove my motherboard each time i want to remove my psu for the purpose of cleaning cuz i have really big hands and my case is a mid tower. some connections might now be labled like the sata and 4 pin and maybe even the 6 to 8 pin vid card ones. but they are easy to recognize.... small l shaped ones are for the hard drives. white 4 pins are normally for accessories like fans and some cd drives. the black 6 to 8 pin connectors go to video cards.

Shamu

I am rather confident that the power supply has been the cause of my unusual issues, at least I sure hope so.

every time ive had that loop problems ive had a faulty RAM stick or a program compatability issue
