Im polling the community for any info about e-trading. The older i get (i just made 46) the more i am compelled by things like this. I'm just looking for opinions and such. I generally am fiscally conservative....you gotta have money to spend it, and i aint got enough money to afford the luxury of fantasizing if i had money......but i sure would like to in the future. Anyone who's on it just lemme know what you think.

I use Scottrade. They are fairly straightforward and the fees aren't too bad.

They also have a pretty fair number of funds available too. I usually hold positions for the long term though and am not an overly active trader.

Used to use Ameritrade, no problems.

Now rather conservative with most money in mutual funds via Vanguard (VIPSX, VWEHX), Schwab (HARL, STHTX) and Smith Barney (CSRSX, SGENX). I also have money invested with a broker who works through my bank. Just bought AMAT, GE, TOT and TEVA, at the moment :ouch: but am only one day in and tend to hold.

Also have MPA, a tax free municipal bond fund and VFIIX, a Vanguard GNMA where my retirement and SS checks go. I have no bank savings account and keep a minimum in a bank checking account because interest rates suck.

Thinking about ETF's which hold a certain appeal for investing.

I use Scotia iTrade. Not a serious trader, just like to play around once in a while and find the fees to be ok for what I do. Straight forward and fairly easy to self manage. Just have to be mindful of what you can afford to lose.

Key point, don't play stocks if you can't afford to lose.

It is basically legalized gambling but you can reduce risk by research.

Personally I like Morningstar.

thanks for the replies folks. I dont neccesarily have money, but im a corporate stooge and got about 20 to 25 yrs left to put something together to shore up my deal come that time. My faith in a 401k is shaky at best, so something else, by my own hand , is in order. I only know that i'm finally old enough to run around life with the mantra of regret....I WISH I KNEW THEN WHAT I KNOW NOW!!!!!!!! All y'alll over 40 know what i mean......

Billy, FYI I am a blue collar union auto worker worker for most of my life, also spent some time as a floor supervisor.

Bottom line is that I too did not start saving until after 40 years of age. Put 3 kids through 2 years each of community college and one with the final 2 years at Villanova for a nursing degree.

I am now over 68 years old and have over one million in cash assets by way of 401', IRA's, stock and personal savings. It can be done and you must persevere and establish a regular savings pattern.

And least you think I have been cheap and squirrled all my money away let me assure you I did not. I have two homes, two cars, a married off daughter ($$$) and have always enjoyed a nice two week vacation. This year I have rented an ocean front home in the Outer Banks of NC big enough for my whole damn family. Oh, and I recently bought a Regal 2000 boat, cost more than my cars. :sorry:

This certainly may sound like bragging but I am only trying to make the point that it is not too late for you and most other visitors to this forum. I was not left any money, my wife and I earned everything we got and tried to save and invest wisely. I assure you if I had only put the money into a bank account I might only have 25% of what I have today, probably even less.

It takes discipline and sound investing habits.

And be very careful of your "own hand", be sure you do research and homework. Without research and homework your own hand holds a high potential for more harm than good.

I wish you good luck.
