The townies pay less for the same service purely because there are more competitors after a slice of the cake. The two big hitters here are British Telecom (BT) and Virgin Media. BT's network has, traditionally, been built with twisted copper cables and it is only now extending its FTTC (fibre to the cabinet) reach. This means that fibre optic cable runs from the telephone exchange to the cabinet at the end of ones street and the final stretch to ones home is copper cabling. Virgin is ahead with the technology as it laid fibre for cable TV services years ago but those of us who live in homes built after the cable went down miss out as there's no cable under our street! The third option is mobile broadband (3G/4G) - useless for games as the ping is so high and usage is capped. Our area is also covered by a WiMax provider but one needs a dish fitting to the house to use that. Awards

As many of you know, we are stuck with crappy DSL from AT&T that has a MAXIMUM download of 1.5 mb. Not only is the speed pathetic, but more often than not, our connections are horrible. When it rains, we basically can't use the internet. Cable doesn't come to my house but my neighbors have it. The cable company would run it to us if we pay them $1800 up front and commit to a plan of at least $60 per month for 2 years. I've called AT&T numerous times and asked about U-Verse only to find out that it will NEVER be available in my area. I also told them how bad they suck but they say that our low speeds and high pings are "acceptable" by their standards. We're stuck with them unfortunately. We can't even use our Directv on-demand feature because of the crappy internet we have. Awards

A shame, as well, is what we have to pay for any digital access. Between full-blown TV/Internet and smart phones, you can be looking at $350 or more a month - not too long ago, that would have bought a nice middle-class home. The answer is more competition on a state/local scale since the big boys running national networks are in an endless circle jerk, with lots of K-Y to go around. BigPapaDean 1 Awards
