I know many people in the US support Australian style gun control so here is my two cents on the issue.

When the Port Arthur shooting happened I was a Police Officer (not in that State though).  After the shooting, there was a huge outcry about firearm possession in Australia, and the rules for possessing weapons were tightened quite a lot.  Sounds like a fair reaction?  Well here are a couple of things that happened:

POLICE OFFICERS in my state were restricted in the circumstances they were allowed to carry weapons.  Prior to that, every time you left the station on duty, you were armed.  The change was that you were now only allowed to be armed if you were performing duties where you were likely to come into contact with offenders/suspects.  So if you for example had to take some evidence or paperwork to a neighboring station, driving a marked car, you couldn't carry a firearm.  And so if you were passing a bank or a gas station and a hold up alarm was activated .... lol nope just keep driving.  Or you saw a drug deal going down....yep keep driving.  We even had an acronym for it -  FIDO (Fuck It, Drive On)  Thankfully that douche baggery only lasted about a year before things were relaxed again.

As part of the new regulations we had a huge gun buy back scheme - lots of weapon types were banned and you had to surrender them for a government mandated value.  These weapons were sent to the State Forensic Science Laboratory for storage and ultimate disposal.  One day I had to drop in to the SFSL to pick up a statement from a gunshot residue expert who had attended one of my crime scenes.  Anyway, while I was walking through the firearms section, I saw an Inspector I knew who was checking serial numbers on brand new stainless steel revolvers, and then throwing them into a rubbish skip.  This seemed a bit strange so I asked him what was going on.  He told me that as part of the State Government drive to remove firearms from the community, these weapons had been taken from FISHERIES and WILDLIFE OFFICERS who would now be performing duty unarmed.  The plan was that if they had a high risk job they would get a Police Officer to attend with them.

What was interesting was that I transferred to a country town shortly after that (5 Officers, generally only one of us on duty at any time).  I happened to have a suspect under arrest and had to transport him to a neighboring town when I got a call from the local Fisheries Officer requesting assistance to detain 3 suspects he had observed poaching and believed were armed.  Well, I couldn't help, the Divisional Duty Officer wouldn't authorise any of the off-duty officers to be called in, so the suspects weren't detained...

This is just a couple of (perhaps extreme) examples of what happened to me personally when the anti-gun brigade gets too much of a say.  Don't even start me on my semi auto .308 rifles I had to surrender.

Slightly off-topic, but I am going to join my local pistol shooting Club as I want to keep my skills up.  I'm hoping to purchase a .38 Smith and Wesson K Frame 6" barrel (my service sidearm from back in the day) and a Glock 17 (my current service sidearm).  To be able to possess these firearms I will need to be a Club member for at least 12 months, pass safety tests and examinations, and compete in at least 8 competition shoots a year with these firearms as my reason for possession will be sport/target shooting.

Thanks for the rant!
