How can over a 1 million jobless claims be considered signs our economy is improving? When did they start calculating it by the week rather a month? At this rate next year everyone will be out of work. 1 million x 365 = 365,000,000 - 360,000,000 = -5,000,000 <youtube>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06CbJ_MkJfg</youtube>

Where do you draw the line between "looking for work and not getting it" and "not looking and not getting it". Such a statistic is HEAVILY dependent on how you calculate the numbers anyway. hxtr 1

I would love to see the real numbers. Many have stopped looking for work long time ago. Young adults to adults in their 30's are moving back home. Just funny at the end of the video it says the numbers are a sign the economy is improving and employers are ready to hire. It does not mean that at all. Talk about spin.

I wonder what the criteria is in the US for being "employed" ? Awards

Anybody that doesn't collect unemployment benefits isn't counted as unemployed, even if they've lost everything, homeless and on welfare. The feds use employer DE6 forms which are used to submit federal payroll taxes to verify employment and they don't specify whether the new employee works 1 hour per week or 40 hours per week. They use all kinds of tweaks to make them look more favorable. It's all smoke and mirrors. Economists calculate using something called the U-6 scale, and if you include all of the people who had full time employment prior to 2008 compared to now, the actual unemployment number is more like 11.9%.
