After all this ungrading and getting on line I believe that my CAT cable is going bad. The last few days I have had so much lag and being on and off the internet that it is about the only thing left. I had had one go bad before but I need to know which one is the best rating I can get. I need at least a 50 ft cable to reach my pc. I found one at the local Staples for $16.00 and I also found one at Newegg for $8.00 but then I have to have it shipped and overnight I am better just buying the local one. I could use some imput on this tho as I do not know much about these cables! Thanks guys from your biggest pest BigPapaDean! :D

Dean,

I believe cat6 is the latest but is really only necessary for gigabit networks.  If your modem and network adapter are not running at gigabyte speeds (1000k), then cat 5e will be sufficient.  However, if you do plan on upgrading to gigabit if not already running, then get cat6.  Not sure what the price is as it may vary from store to store and by brand.  Cables to Go I found to be not too bad from Tiger Direct but not sure what Staples carries.

Good luck.

Are you going faster than Gigabit? If not Cat5e is just fine.

^ what they said....

However, for 50' I would go with cat6 personally. Cat6 is also good for anything over 100' since it uses twisted pairs to counter interference and counter the effects of coupling.

Note: get  STP cat x?  if cable is around other wires, metals

STP means shielded

and UTP  is un-shielded  cable
