I'm moving out in a couple of weeks, yay, (maybe a month). As I'm renovating my apartment I wan't some new light in my "hall" and in my bedroom. I have an idea of how to do this, but I'm still a little bit out in the dark about it.. So.. Anyone have some experience with this kind of project?

I'm thinking something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09eEdbpb-nI

Im thinking to run this of a arduino so that I can connect this to another project that I'm planning atm.

There are low voltage LED it's that use a adhesive taped back string of lights. They work great The tape is 1/2 inche wide with a LED every inch They are not dimable but are very easy to install. Rockler has kits, look them up on line to get a idea of how they work. Then you can find rolls of the lights on line cheaper than Rockler along with the termination blocks and transformer. There good for accent lighting and in long stretchs add some light. Attached are some I worked into the under side of my kitchen cabinets when I built thempost-1213-0-85926700-1483140746_thumb.jpgpost-1213-0-44108100-1483140775_thumb.jpg

Thanks mate, I'm thinking some digital addressable ones, so that i can make som kind of pattern or something. I've looked at some diffrent ones on ebay, but I've calculated that I have to get atleast 20m of led light... and that's quite a lot imo.

But i can't figure out how much power and how to set the grid up, the codeding part of this project is a no brainer for me, so that's no problem. But the whole electronics part is the big problem.. :/

Or something like this:

Well...if you got the coding part all figured out it's all easy from there...

from what i see the first ebay link you posted are your best bet, they are 5V so your power brick should have that voltage output. now you need to find out what Amp rating one single strip has and multiply it to the number of strips you need to use.

for example you need one 15 meter long strip on one power brick, they come in 5 meter strips and each strip is 2.5 amps. in order to power the entire 15 meters you will need a power brick with a 5V output and a minimum of 7.5 amps. you can always go over the amp rating without any major issues but not below it as the led's will be starved of power.

as for setting the grid up...easy...most led strips come with a male connector on one end and female connector on the other so you can daisy chain them.

a side note, these strips do not have single RGB led's, they use 3 separate led's to mix the color up so transition stile effects will seem laggy as the will jump 3 led's at a time and the chain will loose fluidity. but they will work ok for simple light effects.

if you want something like this things get a bit more complicated

Work Voltage: 5V DC
power for each SMD: 0.3W

that is 0.3 times how many LED bulb will give the total wattage then to find amps

oh forgot to say pay attention to the LED current requirement ...do not go over the spec rating of it otherwise will burnout over time

Thanks diggy :-) ill look into it, what led strips will you recomend? The led's from the vid, is 15£ pr.m and that way too much as I need 25-30m.. I'm gonna have 3 grids. Two separate grids in the "hall" and one in the bedroom. The two ones in the "hall" will be 6-7m and 4m, the one in the bedroom, is most likely to be 10-12 m. Edited by zigge_51

Thanks @@KaptCrunch , i didn't scroll down.

@@zigge_51 ,well...the first two grids should be ok with those chinese strips. but the bedroom will be a problem, as you will be pushing 100+ W of power through them, i fear they will work for a few hours and then the power traces in them will burn.

bedroom is a relatively big project so you don't wanna skimp out on it...
