When I was a kid I remember my late uncle telling me stories about his combat experiences in Korea. One of his favorite stories was when he and his unit were on a high ridge facing down several hundred Chinese soldiers who were attempting to overrun their position. He recalled that even though they had the high ground, the Chinese snipers were laying down heavy fire and it was very difficult to raise your head high enough to get a shot off at the advancing enemy. The Gurkha solders were standing out in the open on the edge of the ridge, screaming like mad men and waiving their knives in the air, and the Chinese snipers couldn't seem to hit them. Every time the Chinese would begin to advance up the hill the Gurkha men would run down to kill them. Eventually air support drove back the Chinese, but my uncle always said that had it not been for the bravery of the Gurkhas, the hill would have been lost long before air support had arrived.
