Deer Remedies Anyone?

Had our strawberries mowed off the other night, severely ticked me off. Our lovely four-footed beasts have now destroyed a stand of tulips in the front yard and ruined some emerging hostas & coral bells. I've caged all our remaining buckeye & maple trees. Tempted to sit on the front landing all night with a mauser, but our neighbors might object to the noise.

Anybody have quiet, less lethal suggestions for discouraging deer? They are creatures of habit, and we want to break their habits.

Tough to say, if you put up a fence just remember the deer can jump over your head.

 

I have a friend that lived by the river sprinkled a bit of that powder you put on garden plants to keep off the bugs. It wasnt enough to be lethal and hurt them but as you say creatures of habit they never came back

Put jalepeno juice in a spayer and spray the items you don't eat such as low hanging tree limbs and leaves. Spray a couple sacrificial strawberry plants and let the deer enjoy the spicy flavours. It keeps rabbits out of my garden and most dogs don't go near it either. And it's bio-degradable!

Short of using a crossbow that your neighbors won't hear, I have a friend that laid rows of PVC pipe down around his beds and the deer woudn't cross them. I guess the theory is the same as a cattle crossing in a road. The cows know they can't walk across the grate and avoid them.

Best to use a non windy day. Also, plan on leaving for a few hours after application. The smell is bad but goes away after a bit. they wont touch it again.

as far as rabbits yoda plant some marigolds aroung your garden rabbits cant stand the smell. i guess i am lucky the deer dont touch my berries

Blood Meal. You can find it in any lawn and garden center. Deer and rabbits are vegetarians and can't stand the smell/taste. I've heard of getting old hair from a hair salon's trash and sprinkling it around. Supposedly, it smells like predators too.

guys i've just takin the burlap off of out spruce trees today . i put it on to keep the deer from eating them over the winter like 80 trees . untill they get tall enough that the deer can't chew the tops off i have to do this . good luck tryin to keep them away .they say lavander i tried irish spring soap dont work .AND HEY THE RACOONS WERE THERE FIRST YOU MOVE SHAMU LOL .sorry to hear they broke your back tring to get them falling off a ladder .

Agreed, but then they lived outside. When they moved inside they crossed the line.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Put down ground chilli pepper on everything last night. I think the jalapeno idea might be the best. Main thing is to stop them from starting a pattern around the house. They'll walk around an acre of alfalfa & clover down below to bite off a row of blue spruce down our lane, just because it's on their path. Maddening thing is they'll bite it off and spit it out. Not tasty, it's just something different. Only things I've found they won't bother are marigolds & cedar trees. Lori doesn't like marigolds, and I've transplanted 30+ cedars all around. Some have grown into beautiful trees, but I never cared for cedars to begin with.

Any True Value Hardware Store Carries a few different Sprays that contain Urine from Known Deer Predators. I have used & It Does Work For Me.

marigolds works good for the rabbits (I plant them in my garden)

as for the deer I have try a few thing bout as we speak and is working

I mixed hourse manure as my compost so far so good

and at the edge of the yard I have tin cans hang up side down with ivory soap (so far so good)

 

now the guy up the road from me takes deer skin, that he get from the meat packing and raps it around a few trees and he never has a deer problem. ( this sounds the best but I'm affraid it will bring the wild dogs in

The hair from the salon is all I know. My brother works at a barber shop and they have people come in all the time asking for it for that reason. He says they all claim it works quite well.

What about squirrels? I have more trouble with squirrels and blue jays than anything else. the deer have to cross to much asphalt to get here. I have one squirrel in particular that is watching my bell peppers grow. He is patiently waiting for them to get decent size. I am NOT joking, the little fellow comes and checks on it everyday, I have one plant that already has 2 peppers on it about golf ball size.

And for the blue jays? Last year I barely got enough black berries to fill one small soup bowl. I thought about the fake owl's,but I have heard they tend to not work very long. Rabbits don't come near the garden because of my dog being on a chain and so close to it, but the squirrels will hang in the tree or sit on the fence and taunt her, throw walnuts at her even. Mean little rodents.

I have heard of strips of cloth hung in trees to look like snakes for keeping Bluejays away. An old Indian trick I believe. No idea if it works or not since birds are more than welcome to my cherries and blueberries.

 

What amazes me how birds seem to know, almost to the minute, when to harvest. At the specific time Blackbirds will descend en masse on my cherry tree and pick it clean. Probably how Alfred Hitchcock got his idea for The Birds.

Get 2 Cats ..... mine kill everything, if it moves - is smaller than a duck, is within a 5 mile radius of my house .... it's fucked!

I' ve got the answer buy a lawn chair and let the wife sit outside at night time but make her mad before she go's. They can scare anything or anybody away.

make a scarecrow with a tin can or two attached to make noise and move with the wind....and put it out for a night or two....remove it one night and put it out another.......they,ll change their pattern......make sure you hide the scarecrow about mid september, as its killin time...

I'm gonna try a couple of those. As far as the birds go, i don't mind sharing my blackberries with them, but I do want more than one bowl for my self.

Theres a whistle out and a recording out if you can find them ...(google) that will repell deer.

if you can manage it before they get too big, net the trees and that will stop the birds, but ive used an owl decoy to frighten them too, and that works for the tree rats as well

Tree rats..... That's what we call them here too! Main issue got started when a neighbor put a salt block out. WTF?!? They're sorry now, but the damage has been done. Might as well send an invitation to a rapist for your teenage daughter......d'oh!
