British composer Thomas Arne (1710–1778) is the composer of the song (first sung in 1745). He also did Rule Britannia. I think I got it right but who knows.

God Save The Queen! If I am not mistaken the original use of beacons was to warn of sighting an invasion fleet such as the French or Spanish. Not sure if it goes back to the time of the Saxons.

Public events today, after yesterday's concert outside the gates of Buckingham Palace, have included a service of thanksgiving at St Paul's Cathedral, a carriage procession and a flypast over the palace by the RAF in salute of our Queen. Unusually, there was also a feu de joie by the guards below the balcony. We now await Her Majesty's broadcast at 6pm, after which I shall bring in my Union Flag and go to a last celebratory dinner of this Diamond Jubilee. Long May She Reign! baldie 1 Awards
