LMAO>>>>>>

All ENGLISHMEN from north of Watford(just above London) speak in a strange and weird way....

their accents are like they lived on Mars or something...

I think its due to working in mines with no daylight or a disease they catch from farm animals or "chips unt Gravey".....they are always wet and cold and live in Stone or rock shacks....

As I am from the south we are warned about them in Primary school and we have translators brought in to teach us to understand them from an early stage......

LMAO(this is only the opinion of a southerner brought up with sunshine and wealth and no "chips , pies or gravey" lol

It's funny, in the US it's the southerners that can be more difficult to understand, although I'm bi-lingual and speak northern and southern US English fluently. I'm still working on my New England English but have a fairly good grasp of it. Canadians speak Greek to me. I have an app on my cell phone to translate forum posts by Pete and other Canadians. :hrhr:

Ay-up (hello) lad!

The linguistic roots of all this are centuries old and were brought about by the partition of England

following the Viking invasion. Whilst the south remained under Saxon control, a large area of

East Anglia, the Midlands the North formed "The Danelaw" that was ruled by a Danish king.

Here's a picture of our country in 878 AD:

To this day, one can identify from which part of the country someone comes by the way they speak.

The north-eastern accent (as heard when SOB speaks) is descended from the English Northumbrian

dialect whereas Yorkshire (as heard when wildbill speaks) is descended from the Viking dialect.

Place names up north (oop north) are influenced by the old Viking and Norse tongues too.

Here's an example of real old Yorkie dialect (with subtitles).

(I'm fascinated by the English Language and studied it with the Open University.)
