From what I know the jets were infinitely better but just came too late in the war to have a significant effect.

Because of fuel consumption they could only stay airborne for very short periods of time.

Well the German ME 262 was the first jet powered plane to fight in WW2. Its top speed of 560 mph and ceiling of over 37,000 feet made it hard for most prop planes to target the jets in a high speed fight. The Spitfire had a top speed of 380 and 35,000 feet. This made it easy for a jet to drop in from above and take out a spitfire in formation and climb back above the Spitfire's top fight area. That being said the Spitfire had a greater turning radius especially in low speed flight against the Me 262. The ME 262's engines had low thrust at low speeds and a wider turn radius. If you look at the timeline of the war Germany had lost most of their experienced pilots by the time the Me 262 was ready for deployment. Factoring that in with pilots using traditional propeller based dogfighting skills while flying jets might have actually negated the advantages of such a fast plane. Also Britain built the Gloster Meteor jet and it was put into service in July of 44. The main aircraft that the Spitfire faced in combat were the Bf-109, Bf-110, Heinkel He-110 bomber, Junkers Ju-87, Ju-88 bombers and the Focke-Wulf Fw 190. So I guess I'm saying that the Me 262 was a better aircraft than the Spitfire in some areas but not as good in others. In lots of fighters of that day it all came down to the skill of the pilots.

the German ME262 rocket propelled fighter/bomber was built to tackle the powerful Spit 14, The Spit 14 was a very versitile plane with great speed and manuverability. The German pilots would use the Boom N Zoom tactic. They would be able to get much higher in altitude then the Spits they would dive down on spits and bomber formations and blast through and keep going straight and gain altitude again. They tried turning with the spits and they were dead meat. Even one or two turns would burn up enough energy that the spits would eat them alive. My favorite WWII plane would be the german Messerschmitt109k. Flown properly it could also eat up spits with the 65 rounds of 30mm cannon and 300 rounds of 13mm MG's but with the fuel shortage for germany in the last legs of the war the 109K was doomed luckily.

Before i found COD i plaid one game exclussivly. It was called Fighter Ace, it was a WWII based Multiplayer flying game. Different arenas you could join from FFA to Teams. Over 100 WWII planes and bombers you could choose to fly from USA, Germany, Russia, Japan, Great Britan. Unfortunatly the game went under :-( There is still a free EARLY version of the game if anyone is into WWII planes where you can fly a Spit9 ,Spit14, Hurricane, P51, LA7, Yak3, and a bunch of others. The graphics are crappy but it is still good fun if you got a joystick kicking around. Google up Air Attack (And cheese it is based on your side of the pond so connection would be good) and it is free. You can fly using keyboard but chances are you will get eaten up by those with a joystick

each one had its advantages, but as said before, the jet came really late in the war to make a big difference. Earlier, more then likely, it would have made a great advantage

so i gather from you're all saying it was a 50/50 thing like hardcore saids with both of them having their own advantages+Pilot skills. I'm gonna stick to my guns and say the SPITFIRE is the most sexual boner material aircraft ever created..people may differ that i'm only saying it because its British :P but those who flew the Spitfire, It mut of been a true Honor.

As a Brit I'm sure the Spitfire is your favorite, but most of us Yanks prefer the P51 Mustang. Both planes have the same power plant but damn, those Mustangs sure are sexy. A man in my town owns a completely restored Mustang and frequently flies it. The sound of it approaching on a low and fast strafing run always brings me out to watch it fly by. When I hear the roar of the engines going by I can't help but feel like a little kid at an air show.

When i attend air shows i only attend for the Lancaster Bombers and Spitfires/Hurricanes because the sight and noise is just Overwhelming...it really does demonstrate the raw power of those days and frankly i still do think to this day it's probably one of the most sexiest planes ever invented after the F35 and Euro fighter Thypoon

Well my favorite ww2 plane is the P-38 Lightning. I think it looks great. it didn't see much action in the European Theater but it did great in the Pacific against the Zero. Japanese pilots learned to never take a P-38 head on because of the 4- 50. cal and 1-20 mil in the nose.
