So this is a bit technical. I am getting my new pc next week and will be turning my current one into a server. i got 2 new hard drives coming it at 2 tb each. I am thinking of putting linux servers on it as the os and doing a webgui on it since linux servers doesnt have a gui.

i have a static ip address as of next week.

now my questions

1. how can i run this server to send and receive internet wirelessly since it is going to be located in a difference room of the house so that it is now in the way or near where my kids can get to it?

2. Will i be able to run multiple game servers and webpages off this one server?

comments?

Hey, Sounds cool.

One of the major things is your internet service. You upload and Download Speeds and Bandwidth. If you got good internet you should be able to run a Game server... how many depends on what the system has.

I run a Server with FTP and a Game server... i can get about 15 people in it without much lag. And it is a P4. So if yours is stronger u could possibly run more than one game at a time.

Depending on your internet connection and the specs, yes. A gameserver causes huge load on your CPU and RAM. And you should have at least 1Mbit free on your connection (up and down) - per player.

Let me know if you need help setting up your *nix box and the webserver. I can not and would not help you Setting up the game servers.

Did the same thing many years ago running Apache on Red Hat Linux with a fixed IP - been so long can't remember the games I hosted. Had a lot of fun back then; I had one box that would triple boot to Linux, Win95, and XP (I was a Microsoft beta tester for XP)

- Most ISPs frown on you running your own Internet server due to bandwidth they typically consume. Make sure your provider is OK with this to avoid problems down the road. I know some providers prohibit servers.

- You don't want a wireless connection to a game server - if you've an older network you're only getting 10Mps. You need to run Cat5 right to the box.

- The ability to run multiple games is essentially a product of the hardware - and the game. If you've a recent CPU and a couple gigs of RAM you should be able to run several games at the same time if not more, again, depending on the game. You may have trouble serving up multiple versions of more recent games despite that although most of the work in done on clients, they still demand a lot from the system. You'll have to experiment. (It's fun connecting to your own game server from another box - zoom zoom, though an unfair advantage.)

Yea well done Harry. Your going to really want to run it wired. Where as wireless is really a great thing it does get all funky with your connection.
