Found & downloaded all three movies (already had Play Dirty & Too Late the Hero). Gritty British films all, highly recommend them to anyone who appreciates a more realistic view of war, rather than Hollywood's cliches'. Thanks SOB!

Wow you stirred up some very fond memories from when I was a kid (still am) and me and my 4 brothers would watch Combat and then after the show we would re enact the the battle scenes sometimes ending up in a bare knuckler . . .lol .  Good Times indeed.

Vic Morrow was an excellent actor, his role in Combat seemed to be written just for him.

Must have been another show LOC don't think there were Dune buggies around in WW2, they wouldn't have given much armour protection if so.

Digging through my books, How about Brazen Chariots by Major Robert Crisp? With Rommel in the Desert by H.W. Schmidt? Know I had a book by David Stirling, describing the exploits of the SAS in North Africa, but damned if I can find it.

Used a program AVStoDVD to expand the downloaded .mkv files and burn to dvd. The movies Sea of Sand & Ice Cold in Alex turned out beautiful, and my wife even enjoyed watching them. The Long, and the Short, and the Tall was an .avi file, and didn't come out as nice, but still watchable. Any other suggestions SOB, pile em' on!

This movie is not about the British or the allies, it's about The last months of Hitlers reign in Berlin, told through the eyes of his private secretary it is called "Downfall" if you are intersted in this aspect of WW2 and don't mind reading subtitles you will really enjoy this movie, one of the best i'v seen in recent years, it shows how the third reich finally crumbles and you actually feel for and admire some of the German officers in this movie and how they stood up to Hitler and put their lives on the line for their men, when he was hellbent on destroying everything, think the actor who plays Hitler was nominated for the Oscar for this movie too, it is a fantastic portrayal of Hitler, best i  ever seen

These are some i can think of with a British Theme @TheLastColdBeer,

1) Dunkirk

2) The Dam Busters

3) The Eagle Has Landed

4) The Battle of Britain

5) Bridge over the River Kwai

You probably heard or seen some of these, especially like Bridge over the River Kwai which won a few Oscars i think, Dunkirk is often shown over here, shows the disaster at Dunkirk and the heroism of ordinary people who went in their fishing Boats to try and rescue the British and French troops from a massacre, great movie, you can watch the movie Dunkirk or i posted a TV version we done for the UK a few years ago which was very good and probably goes into it more then the movie does, think the TV version was done by the BBC  if you want to search for it, both worth watching, The Battle of Britain is quite a famous movie too with some unbelievable flying scenes and of course it features the greatest airplane ever built, the Spitfire.

I'll have to do some searching, it was a Ballantine book, but it wasn't The Phantom Major. Another of my favorite movies was The Train, starring Burt Lancaster. They must have had a ball making that movie, because all the train smash-ups were with the real thing. All these old locomotives & rolling stock were laying around awaiting the scrappers torch. Might as well crash a few  making a war movie.

Here's a website that's a wealth of information on the New Zealand side of things in the desert. Endless info about the Greek & Crete battles. Detailed logs on the NZ LRDG participation. You could spend years reading all the history that was recorded.

yup so much that so many don't know about WW2 because the only history reference point is hollywood movies for a large majority, it was a world war with many countries involved all with great stories to tell but maybe because of lack of funding these stories are only told in print so many hear about them.
