Hey guys,

My mother has recently sought (without her knowledge) my help as she's continuously being ripped off by her local PC shop.

It's time for her to update to a new system and rather than buying an unreliable PC with tacky parts in it from PC World I suggested she saves some $$$ and I stick a computer together for her...

With around a £400-£500 budget I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for decent components that would do a perfectly fine job at running her small business

Any suggestions would be appreciated, Eddtheduck already suggested something like barebones packages and reusing her old PC tower case...

any thanks in advance for any help!

Not redundant.  Superfluous or obsolete, maybe, but not redundant.

Start here:  http://www.newegg.com/DIY-PC-SuperCombos/PromotionStore/ID-33

There are pages and pages of DIY kits.  A good place to browse and get acquainted with what's out there and for what price.  Then either choose one of their builds, of start with one and build further.  As someone said here recently, "Newegg is your friend."  It's true!

Good call!

You can make a much better computer for the same money if you DIY!

It's a real shame that most small computer shops rip you off. There's one right around the corner from here... "ollie's computer's"... oh the stories!!!

They don't rip you off.  They do need to get paid for what they do.  You can't just go around building computers for just the cost of the components for everybody, otherwise how are you putting food on your table and paying your rent/mortgage.

Now if by "rip you off" you mean sell you cheap, crap components, then yes - that's a shame.  But many computer shops will build to your specs, or guide you in selecting great components for a build.  But there's a cost to that and the service of building it for you, is all I'm saying

I agree dj i used to be one of those shops. Everyone wants everything for nothing well that drove me out of business and furthered the big box stores now there is no small shops out there that you can just drop in and get service. You get the idiot slobbering kid that knows nothing at the big box store. I miss the small shop days if you have one near you take pictures of it cause it wont last.

Here are some actual RIP-YOU-OFF stories of the place around the corner...  (Seen first hand. I also worked with a guy who used to be the owner's assistant there.)

- Owner would walk over to our radioshack store and buy 10 thumbdrives to re-sell in his own store for $5 more.

- Owner would keep peoples PC's for 3 weeks "while he removed viruses" but really all he did was have his assistant use free antivirus software like Malwarebytes. He would then charge the customer $150.

- Owner would not check with customers before purchasing replacement components such as HDD's. He would then trap the customer into paying lots of money for cheap parts (he would mark them up). He would not give them back their PC till they paid.

Yes, there are assholes out there, and that's one valid use of an attorney because I guarantee you, if an attorney sends him a letter to shape up or face consequences in court, s/he's going to  do it.

yea, admittedly a bit of a rotten apple. I'm sure there are some great custom PC shops out there.
