You show, in your own post, that the graphics card is the slowest bit in that rig, and yet you suggest upgrading the CPU.

I do not understand that. I also don't agree with it being the best idea.

I guess If my mobo can socket a new processor, I may be able to keep the board in the mean time, Looking at these prices, a new build in the same case and using some old parts (ram and temporarily my current gpu), I could pull off a decent set up. A new build is starting to sound great now. My PC isn't terrible, and my processor hasn't shown me any struggle, only my gpu so far.

Yes I do think the video card is the weak link right now for GAMES.  I would upgrade the CPU for more gains in overall performance.  If he mainly just plays games then the video card would be the best upgrade for now.  That is why I added the GTX 760 in my second post.  I felt showing him multiple options would give him more to think about.  I apologize for any confusion on my part.  Looking at the prices of the AMD parts they are so low right now it is hard to pass them up.  If asked I will no longer post my opinion about this topic.  Sorry for any inconvenience.

I looked at the cpu compatibility chart on the MSI site and it does list the AMD FX-8350 and 8320.  You are a good person to offer him your spare motherboard.  The world needs more people like you. That is a top notch motherboard as well. If Unit 108 does not want the motherboard,  I would be interested in acquiring it for a new build for my brother.  PM me if Unit 108 declines the offer please.

I know AM3+ was backwards compatible with AM3 because that's what I just upgraded to yesterday. but I don't think AM3/+ has backwards compatibility with AM2+ (which is what your 965 is).

You'll be looking at a new mobo and CPU if you want to go with the new Vishera cpus.

So hang on, what are we going for now, buffing the rig entirely, or just spending the minimum to make BF4 run reasonably well? Last time I read the start post it was about getting BF4 running playably/more smoothly.

Well, the only thing I wonder is if I do only crossfire my current set up could I see a preformance boost, maybe 20+ frames! not major, but recordable on low settings.
