I always turn mine off until spotted by an aircraft. Once spotted I turn it on so my AA can fire and in some cases it will chase than plane away. This works best if it is a spotter plane. If it is a squadron of fighters it might work also. However, if you are targeted by dive bombers or torp bombers it won't matter. The best thing to do to hide is smoke. There is also the case that if you are in smoke and you don't shoot your AA, you are hidden even when planes are overhead. But, if you are in smoke, there are planes overhead, and you shoot AA, you will be spotted. Sonovabich 1

What are Citadel hits, i am sure i must have got 1 or 2 in a game but a lot of games when i get sunk i go straight back to port so i can get into another battle, so i usually don't see this screen lol.

Citadel hits are when your shots get into the heart of the ship and do massive damage. IE, magazine, fuel, etc To get them, use AP rounds and aim right for the water line under the guns.
