Havent had to do it in awhile but I needed to play zombies in cod5 for a bit to see how things worked. But I suppose it wont let me unless I put in the disk. Packed away someplace. Any way I can do it without having to go find it?

Sammy, I installed from disk and am prompted to insert the disk only when playing single-player mode.

I launch the game via HLSW for multiplayer.

Have you tried launching the game with a command line e.g.:
C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty - World at War\CoDWaWmp.exe

Right click the app icon on your desktop and then left click the world at war multiplayer line.  Shouldnt have to have the disk in to do that, should then open the game in multiplayer mode

Unfortunately not zombies. Ah the good ol days when people needed to use an actual disk in the machine to even play.
