Crash Loading COD4

Just got back from Vacay, tried starting COD4 to play tonight. CRASH. Going to need help in the morning to sort it out. Anyone willing to work with me would be greatly appreciated. I really don't want to reload.

fresh install ?  what OS, disc or steam game.  are any errors  or got black screen.

most crashes for CoD4 come from sound problems.  Try setting a different output for your sound in windows.

OK, nothing has changed since I shut it down before leaving on Vacay. WIN 10 OS. The crash dump file I believe mentioned an IW3 file error.  The game begins to load, splash screen pops up, then changes to the profile selection screen for an instant and then it closes down and the crash dump file send to Microsoft popup fires up. Can that be exported? Can I fix an IW3 file?

Bromo many times when I've had a Windows update I've had similar crashes. Just about every time its a sound issue. For some reason windows changes my sound settings and I have to change my default sound equipment back. I use Steele Series Arctis 7 gaming headset and the GG software.

My latest Windows 10 updates were November 13 and 20th.

I did change my sound settings and that wasn't it. I turned off the Windows Defender that suddenly was enabled from the last Windows update. Not it. So I went into the Activision folder, found the IW3MP exe and that's the one that's crashing. However, in there was a shortcut ICON to a "Play COD4 1.7 MW" file, and that launched and worked. I played with that version tonight after updating a few controls that weren't the same and aside from a few minor differences in sound files it plays very much like the crashing version. Should I run the updater again to get me back to the version I was on working again? I don't recall what version that was either?

@BROMODROSYS Totty has some great information on running an COD4 program that smooths everything out for this old game. He talked me through installing it well over a year ago and my game runs very smoothly. I’m sure he has a post already on the site.

As said above, installing COD4X fixes most issues with COD4.

You need to extract the file to your COD4 folder and then run the install from there.

If you have any issues then I could run through it one evening (I'm uk based)

right click exe      select RUN admin ridhts  and when doing updates too.

So now that everything is working again, every map change requires a new download of map files. That's not the bad part, its downloading at 5KB, so maps are taking 2hrs to download. How do I work around this issue?

I believe when this happens you quit the game restart the game go back in and the download should be faster. Doesnt make sense you need to download ALL THE MAPS. Maybe some of the smart Kids can help

use teamviewer to copy someones maps folder or have send a writable DVD disc of maps

My user map folder is 8.4gb.

If you hit tilde and type /reconnect then you can normally resolve the slow download issue that way

/reconnect DOES HELP SOMETIMES, NOT 100%, Sorry bout the caps. I left the game run for a while today and I think most maps are installed now. Thanks for all the suggestions.
