Ok here goes.

I have a Stock 2004 Dodge 1500, 4 Door Short Bed with  a 4.7 liter V8 auto transmision, Stock cooling system.

pulling a 26 foot feather light camper.

I know a bigger truck will help but most trips will be about 50miles the most 200miles.

Questions what to help with pulling, I have a buddy going to change the brake system and I got to paint he kitchen and put up chair .rail...good trade "i think"

I do have load levers. what i was asking is in more line of:

dual exhaust

air intake

chip change

Ok here is my advise, first add an aux trans cooler (a must for towing) and as far as chips go i would save your money.

Put that money towards the air intake and dual exhaust.

I sell trucks for a living and that small V8 will tow 5000 lbs stock but the better you can make it breath the better. I would recommend a 3 inch exhaust and a K&N filter, since most K&N's are bolt on you can remove the air filter cover or drill big holes for more air flow and you should about 25 horsepower increase. No need for a chip as it won't boost much and is pricey. Remember your load is everything inside the truck and trailer above you and a full tank of gas. Does it have A/C ? if so it will have heavy duty radiator and extra cooling. trailor brake controler?

heres from experience.  A week ago i pulled my travel trailer to jacksonville, fl from houston, Texas. I have a 2005 ford f150 4.6l v8, auto trans. my trailer is 30ft long and weighs 5500 lbs. i had a k and n air intake, flowmaster exhaust and fireston ride-rite airbags on the back axle. whi;e the engine mods were nice and i never had a problem with overheating(engine, or tranny) the best money i spent was the airbags. they improve the ride exponentially. i would also reccomend something to monitor the transmission temp. i had no problems. write me if you want.

Sounds like you are getting very good advice here. the trans temp is a big deal, and I had a Autometer trans temp guage on my '73 F100, and my '79 Bronco. It was a very good investment. The trans pan drain plug kit from B&M let me install the temp sending unit easily, while also giving me an easy way to drain the oil from my C6 trans. If you don't remember the last trans fluid change, do it before any long trips, and while you have the pan down, you can either weld in a bung for the sender (usually 1/8" npt) or install the drain kit. For the trailer part, always use dielectric grease on the trailer plugs before they turn green. If you can, borrow an infa-red digital thermometer, and take some readings of your trailer bearings after a long run. This will save money and wasted time on the side of the road (been there!) if you haven't gone over the bearings yet. Bearing buddies are a good investment too. I almost forgot, tongue weight is a big deal with a loaded trailer being pulled by a smallblock truck, so you should read up on how to check your specific trailer requirement, Featherlite should have it at their site.

my advise is to put an K&N filter on it (heres a tip for saving big on K&N filters) Hiflo filters are made by K&N with

the exact same materials (only difference is the packaging) AND THE COST MORE THAN HALF AS MUCH and they

like K&N are lifetime guaranteed and washable , I would also put a Tornado into the intake which the two of them

will give your vehicle about 35 more horse power and about 6 to 10 more miles per gallon .

Bear...If I remember right you're in the foothills?trans cooler...a must have...and the rest of what everybody else said.and also,if I was you,I would trade that for a cummins, chip it,exhaust it,and you would be in love with it.pull the shit out of that camper, and get better mileage out of it as well.good luck either way you go,and enjoy!
