Greetings fellow idiots,I'm planning a new build in a couple of weeks when i'll finally have all my parts but the last part to the jigsaw is....Which Ram to get?To me ram is ram but when you read into it its a minefield, compatibility with mobo, speed, timings etc.Its got me baffled. And my brain hurts with all the reading lol...So i thought i'd ask you guys and maybe someone can shed a little light on the subject.

The build im doing is as follows....Coolermaster storm scout case

                                                      Phenom x6 1100t

                                                      Asus crosshair IV mobo

                                                      Xfx 750watt Black psu

                                                      Coolermaster V8 cpu cooler

                                                      WD 2tb Green (storage)

                                                      Ocz Vertex 2 60Gb ssd

                                                      Evga gtx 570

Any old disc drive i can lay my hands on

                                                      ??????ram????????

What are the options to consider when buying ram,I know faster will be better but what about timings,is lower better or vica versa?

Thanks Bill.

That is good ram.

I have the same CPU and Mobo that you are going to use, and that ram should do you great. I am running with a different set of G.skill, but I don't think you will see any difference. I just got mine because it was CAS 6 instead of CAS 9 (but the same amount (8 gigs) will cost you almost double what nightmare has suggested)

Here are also some links to Crosshair IV formula and AMD CPU 'fan' sites:

I found some useful information on both of these sites. You can read for hours.  BACK TO YOUR QUESTION... on OC board, there is a pretty cool (although a bit dated) article on memory selection. It is what started me digging a bit deeper for making the right choice on ram. Hope you find it useful, or at least interesting.

Just remember, although the 'Qualified Vendor List' for your Mobo may or may not list a particular model of RAM.. it doesn't mean it won't work well with your Mobo.. it just means they didn't test that model with your mobo. My RAM isn't listed in the QVL, but it works beautifully. In fact, I've 'heard' that ASUS mobo's have had problems with Gskill memory.. but I've had nothing but good results from the several different models of Gskill RAM I've used in several different ASUS mobo's.

Thanks guys thats really given me something to consider,i've been looking at those g-skill Nightmare ive also been looking at Corsair Vengeance but after reading a few forums people seem to be deciding more on G-skill,These are what ive recently been checking out, http://www.memoryc.com/computermemory/ddr3ram/8gbgskillsniperpc312800cl9dualkit.html

Great links Bama especially the one that lists the set ups on the mobo gonna spend some time reading those, just 1 question why cas6 instead of cas9?Thats the thing i cant get my head around the timings...........More research needed me thinks but thanks again

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAS_latency

LOL

its not all about timings and latency ....but lower timings and latency is part of a fast RAM and for sure the MHZ of the RAM

mine are running pretty fast now

CPUz4ghz950mhzRAMspeed.jpg

because its double channel its means they are running at 1900 Mhz

its not this important for gaming at all

but if you work a lot with pic and video editing you will like fast RAM Wink

the RAM Preview at Adobe After Effects works a lot better

edit: btw the sniper G.skill RAM is okay....same speeds like the ripjaws

Everything Nightmare said is dead on. That is why I said you probably wouldn't see the difference in the gskill memory he mentioned and the model I mentioned. If you are building a purely gaming (or mostly gaming) rig.. the timing isn't as important as the Frequency. I had a little more money for my memory, and chose to get a little better 'edge' in timing with the CAS 6.

If you would like to do some 'light' reading on memory, I would also suggest this article:

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/55024-30-memory-please-read-posting

It's simplistic but informative, and has some good links and suggested reads at the bottom too. The links I've given you, as you have seen, could keep you busy for a very long time. I hope you enjoy them and find them useful.

Keep us posted on your build.

BTW.. a lesson I learned the hard way.. if you ever expect to run in sLi mode or crossfire with 2 graphics cards.. if you can afford it.. go ahead and get a 1000watt powersupply. I lost money on a 750 that I had to return because I figured out after I ordered it that I needed minimum 950 to run 2 5800 series cards.

the PSU section is the most forgotten part of a pc....well said Bama LOL

but its the same there...its not all about watts

you have to have a look at the max amperes at the +12V rails....this is the most important part for SLI or CF

there are many less efficient PSUs for a little amount of money...

but in worst case you will have to deal with BSODs and crashes a lot....

I use Enermax for a long time now....expensive LOL almost 200 bucks but really happy with it

my 850 watts PSU can handle 3 6970s in triple CF( 35 A on each +12 V rail)

I think ive narrowed the choice of ram down to either the Gskill ripjaws or the sniper series of which i particularly like the look of with the gun heat shield and the black pcb, should look pretty cool against the red and black Crosshair, probably a 2 x 4 gig kit 1600Mhz which will also give me the option of adding more at a later date if needed. Its not primarily a gaming rig cos i'll be using it for everyday stuff graphics and the like, which my present machine struggles to keep up with(Athlon quad DDR2 GTS 250)So i thought its time for a change.

As far as the psu's concerned ive already made my choice for that and purchased the XFX 750 Black Edition,it were either a toss up between that 1 or the corsair 750 watt but decide on the XFX after reading that there more or less a re-label seasonic psu,and ive heard nothing but praise for thier psu's.It should be ample enough power for my needs on a single card set up.

Just cant wait to get started on it now, gonna sheath the cases front I/O panel cables this weekend before i do any thing else, like to keep a tidy house lol. Will keep you posted on the progress, might start a new thread "Wildbill's expensive toaster"lol

Again thanks for the input really appreciated.
