8000 Brits knowing something about George Washington!? ..... Actually, I find it hard to believe - unless the online poll was at Oxford / Cambridge Uni (etc) and only for Students studing "American History"! (all 300years of it :), sorry can not resist that. heh heh)

"the worst defeat for the British Empire ever." .. at this time, I think it was the ONLY defeat for the British Empire !!...

AND you needed the French (as well as Mel Gibson) ..

Shortly afterwards, I believe we started sending our criminals to a warm and tropical climate to live whilst we stayed here in the freezing cold and constantly pissing down with rain tiny little Island we love so much.

Known as the "what a bunch of wankers we were" peroid.

As with many of these online surveys, the result is utterly meaningless.

I used to admire Washington for his moral values - there's a rare quality in a politician who

becomes famous for saying, "I cannot tell a lie" - but then I learned that the story about the

cherry tree was a fabrication, made up by Parson Weems.

LOL, many Americans may not have thought of how good a general Washington was either. I know I didn't.

He was however politically wise and set precedents as President that live to this day.

I also hate to admit that without the help of France the outcome probably would have been dramatically different. Without their help we just might be still speaking "proper English" Thank God the British and French had no love for each other.

Also helped that at the time England had irons in the fire all over the world and was going broke fighting wars.

No Margaret Thatcher was Britains greatest enemy

I think many Americans admired Maggie, a woman with balls. Hell, she could not have been too bad considering how long she served.

This reminds me, I have to watch Iron Lady on my "telly". Any XI reviews out there?

Please Shamu you did not live under her rule, she ruined our coal industry and our Steel industry from which we have never recovered, she destroyed whole communities just so she could destroy the most powerful union in the country, she stayed in power because the other parties were absolutely un-votable at the time, she also changed the boundary lines (in her favour) of constituancies where she might have lost seats and made sure she kept the seats, she was also very lucky Argentina invaded the Falkland islands, her poll rating at the time was the lowest ever (she would surely have lost the next election), she was voted more unpopular then Hitler, it's just a shame that many young soldiers (on both sides) had to die to keep her in power, she must have got down on her knees every night thanking God for General Galtieri, you only saying you admired her because Ronny Rotten was probably shagging her...blimey can you imagine that offspring. :no

LOL, fortunately we in America care little or know anything about any internal British political issues. We only see the world issues and are rather insensitive if the internal issues do not impact on us.

As for President Ronald Reagan, still beloved by the consevative element in the States to this day.

Hmmmm......... SOB, might I guess you are a Liberal?

Obviously I am not.

Politial mindsets often skew perception.

My edit:

While I say I am a Consevative make no mistake I oppose our countries involvement in countries like Afghanistan and Pakistan. I dislike our soldiers acting as NATO's police force. If I could bring them home today I would and let those idiots kill each other until the big dog wins. It is a bitter pill to see American, AND BRITISH, lives being lost in a war that serves us no useful purpose.

Get our troops out and win with technology and economic sanctions instead of our soldiers lives.

Yes, I am a bitter old man.

Its where I started this conversation .. 8000 Brits knowing anything of US history / polotics ...

But interesting that Shamu, re: Involvement ... I've heard many stories as to exactly WHY we are there in the 1st place as it happens.

from the obvious "Oil" and a pipeline to be built through both countries ... to the control of Opium (it's why the UK owned Hong Kong in 1st place!) and then more recently, I heard about "Lithium" http://www.bgs.ac.uk/afghanminerals/raremetal.htm

In my opinion - there's something we're not privy to here that goes way past the risk of being attacked in our own countries!

Agreed, bring the boys and girls home and let them kill each other ... and they will, as they have done for forever and a day!

But if we are going to take this seriously then George Washington was far from being Britains greatest/most feared enemy, Britain was never in any danger from George Washington, or the United States at the time, my country has had many great enemies, we could go back 1000 years and say William the Conqueror, invaded Britain and won the crown with just a few hundred men, changed our whole country as a result, we could say Napoleon who was a real danger to all Europe and parts of North Africa, but i gotta say my country's greatest enemy was Hitler, if it was'nt for a few hundred brave pilots from all over the world who saved our skins in the Battle of Britain in 1940 and material help from the USA then we would probably have been conquered and who knows what would have happened in WW2 after that.

I believe Hitler was not considered because he did not lead troops in battle, as Rommel did, but was primarily a political entity.

And I certainly agree the United States at the time was of no threat to England at all. This was a war of economics and world domination for England, not a war because of any perceived threat from the United States. England wanted to keep the material value of the States and nothing more. I also suppose the common man in England had little say on the subject. ( IE: Rich Mans War........ on both sides.)

The poll confuses me as to the criteria used. I suppose it is just an evaluation of a Generals performance taking into consideration of the odds against them and resources available, not necessarily the threat they posed to England.

Socialist, isn't that somewhat of a Liberal? Providing it is pure Socialism and does not evolve into a Dictatorship. My heritage is Swedish which is a Socialist country but I'll be damned if I possess any of the Sweidsh mentality. I even hit my kids when they deserved it............. only a proper spanking mind you.

BTW, I consider myself Conservative which usually aligns me with the Republican party but I have never in my life voted a straight political ticket. I pick and chose for where my vote will go. Democrat, Republican, Socialist, Libertarian of of late the Tea Party do not determine my vote. The individual candidate is the determining factor.

I've never yet met an American that doesn't always state they are from somewhere else!

Though Shamu has at least put "Heritage" rather than, I'm Swedish!

The first time I went to the US, I stayed with a friend and we had a "Super Bowl" Party ... loads of guys turn up and my pal Mike shouts to me, do you want another beer? ... after I replied, this guy next to me said .."Whoa, are you a fuckin Limey"?? .. I didnt understand what he meant at the time, anyhow .. yes I'm English ,. oh that's great, thanks a bunch Mike, I get to watch the Superbowl with a fuckin Limey .... Not being one to shy away, I said to him .... you have a problem with the English??? Yeah he says .. I'm fuckin Irish !!! - oh here we go ...., Trying to make lite of a potential I asked him ..how long did you live in Ireland??? .. Oh I didnt .. My Great Great Great Grand (whatever) parents did !!!!

Ahhhhhhh I said, sorry, I misunderstood ... I'm Ethiopian!! .. He said "Huh?"

So I asked him, how did his Great Great Grandparents get to Ireland? ... He said "Huh"?

The defense rests M'lord.

ps: Had a great time, though that still ain't FOOTball! and the advert run between maybe amazing to you but we get shit like that every 5 mins DAY IN DAY OUT!!! its an ADVERT!

said "Irish" guy is now and has been since, a Great Great friend ...

There have been at least eight U.S. Presidents with Welsh ancestry including Thomas Jefferson,[3] Abraham Lincoln, John Adams, John Quincy Adams, James Garfield, Calvin Coolidge, Richard Nixon and Barack Obama.[4] Confederate President Jefferson Davis and U.S. Vice President Hubert Humphrey were also of Welsh heritage.l[5]

My wife was half Irish Catholic and we both classified the IRA as nothing better than terrorists. They may hate the English and I do not take issue with that but when they randomly target civilians I find I take exception.

I have also visited her Irish family more than a few times, both here and there, and was quite surprised to find that many in the Republic of Ireland do not want unification with the North. It seems they fear the economy of the North would only hurt the Republic of Ireland.

LOL, so true!

We are loud, egotistical and illiterate, one of the few countries whose citizens do not have the capacity to speak two languages.

Let's not even discuss how we are accused of butchering the English language................. or is it the UK language? ;%29.gif
