what antivirus program is reliable and that someone can recommend.

My bank called me and told me that i have some kind of trojan so they have closed my creditcards for internet use and shopping in other countries.

i really dont have time or patient to format and reinstall my harddrive.

so what do you recommend.

The bank will probably close your old credit cards and issue new ones with new numbers. Make sure anything you have on auto-pay gets updated.

Unless you store your credit card information on your computer in a file where it can be easily found, chances are it wasn't a virus that copied your card numbers. You probably bought something online and the data was hacked from them. I've had one credit card compromised in all the years I've used them, and it was a card I only used for eBay, but they would never admit it.

If you do want anti virus software I would suggest Norton, but others may have their favorites.

Well firewall is a good first defence, but ever since I use norton I get warnings from time to time that they blocked stuff from websites, that got trough the firewall. So use Norton or something similliar. AVG is free, but I'm not 100% sure that covers the latest virusses aswell.

I'd recommend using something that doesn't get viruses, but that is just me.

you many have to work to get that trojan off your PC. The only way to be safe now it to reload your PC. If can remove but to be safe... you need a clean OS. Or do what ping said and go get a Mac. No.. your right.. reloading is way better. lol

Try Microsoft Security Essentials,

http://windows.micro...rity-essentials or

Superantispyware:

http://superantispyware.com/ or

Malwarebytes:

http://www.malwareby...tent=1333723395

I have used all three at different times as one alone will not catch everything. All of them have free editions.

Superantispyware updates daily and will take out 99% of what the other two don't get

I use Kaspersky Internet Security Suite. Just having an Anti Virus and Firewall isn't enough these days.

You also stated that you hoped Windows Firewall would have done the job. Firewalls aren't there to prevent viruses, trojans, etc. They are there to prevent unauthorised access to your computer.

If you go to a website and download a Trojan/virus by accident, then you are still telling the firewall based on your actions to allow access. Only an antivirus would help. It's also extremely important to get one that does "On Access" scanning. This saves you having to run scans all the time. As you access the file/folder it scans it before opening it. Sure it slows your computer down a little bit compared to not having it, though to be fair Norton is the worst at resource hogging, and would have been the last one I would have chosen. As I work in IT security, I would like to think I have a reasonable knowledge in this area.

The product I mentioned is good, as it has additional protection for browsers, etc. Also Kaspersky has an academy to train people to work for them. It is well know that many of their employees are ex hackers and virus/trojan creators themselves. After serving prison sentences, Kaspersky has recruited them for their expertise in defending against that form of attack.

If I ever got hit it is always my fault. I dont run protection anymore as it did make a difference. I just understand what not to do now that keeps me clean.

Turn off Java

If you surf porn or if you search torrents turn of Java. Get firefox for that.. easy one easy off. Anything other than things that need Java like this website for the shoutbox, facebook and other. Plus in firefox get noscript. Then you wont need that other stuff depending what you download.

but run protection... just do the other things when you know it can be dangerous. with java that shit can install in one click and your fucked.... until you get it off.

Them you probably want a suite that has parental control, stopping them from going to certain sites.

I would download malwarebytes for free

run quick-scan and then remove what is found and it may tell you to reboot.this usually will remove any threat.

I use commodo internet security anti-virus and firewall and free micro-soft security essentials which is great.....and they work well together.gl

btw i had avg and I had lots of viruses get past it and its not always compatible with add'l antivirus programs that you may run...thats just my experience
