Dean,

It depends on what you drive. If you own a car that's worth a lot and/or you are still making payments on it then you need full coverage with a lower deductible. If you're driving an older used car that isn't worth a lot then I would strongly suggest getting liability only coverage. It's very cheap and covers you in case you cause an accident, but if your car gets wrecked they don't pay anything if it's your fault.

The online insurance web sites are great for shopping coverage but some are horrible with claims. Don't be afraid to talk to a local insurance broker that represents many different companies. Contrary to what most people believe you don't pay a penny more dealing with an agent than you would going directly to an insurance company yourself, or dealing with an online insurance agent. Plus you generally get much better service from local agents.

If you served in the military then I would go with USAA. they are the cheapest by far.

Dean, is this for new insurance, or do you currently have a policy and are looking for better rates?

There are new companies that are offering car insurance based on mileage driven....but they make you use a device that actually tracks your mileage. Not sure exactly how much less the cost could be.

Here is one company I have heard of: https://www.metromile.com/insurance
