Whilst I don't/can't drink at the minute, doesn't mean in a few months time I can't.

I'd like to start home brewing but frankly, literally have no idea where to start.

I'm a fan of spirits - whiskey, schnapps, vodka etc. Anyone got any clue what to do as YouTube has conflicting advice, as does the net.

Some say it's safe to make your own spirits, others say it's dangerous...so it's a quagmire.

Thanks in advance.

Have never done it but I do know that if you are distilling moonshine you need to throw out the first quart or so because it is full of methanol and can be dangerous to your health.

I currently only brew wine and beer so I probably cannot help you much with spirits.  That said, different states/regions have their own laws on what can actually be brewed.  About the best thing I can recommend is to make sure it is legal, then stop at your local homebrew shop.  They tend to have books/equipiment for brewing spirits (if legal).  My local brewshop sells distillers and ingredients for spirit brewing.

Good luck!

Well I have seen home brew beers and loved them, and wines are not my drink of choice.

Thanks for the advice regarding the methanol however. Good to know.

Yeah, like King Stinger said:  record the next episode of "Moonshiners" on The Discovery Channel, the go and buy yourself some copper sheets to make your still.  It looks like you get better shine when you add have either apples or jalapeno peppers to make your mash.

I remember the 'shiners mentioning something about being careful about explosions, or something like that.  Ayaq

Explosions? Err....hmm...perhaps I need to think long and hard before going down this route.
