I can't really get into the Modern Warfare games. I think CoD WaW is the best version, but the least I've played. Every time I turn around there is another new map (which is very cool). My skills are ok, but there are some folks that rock the scores. And almost every time you see that they have very low pings. I understand that they are closer to the server, but these people most often get the jump on me and I'd like to understand the technical reasons for it. Do they "see" me a split second before I see them? What is up? For instance, if I ping 70 and someone else pings 14, what exactly is the advantage? When I spec these characters, they play almost the same as I. BUDMAN 1 Awards

The numbers that are being talked about are generally so small that it's unnoticeable - however with COD you have the added element that its running on a netcode/codebase that is very old and hasn't been updated to work to its fullest with the hardware that we have today. A great rundown of what you are looking for can be found on Reddit, it's for Overwatch but the basics are the same on any game. TeknonTheos, Nice_Guy, Merlin007 and 2 others 5 Awards

But I got confused when it started talking about lag compensation, as if I shouldn't see any difference. Or is there a timing difference beyond my imagination? Awards

You are always seeing it as there is no way around it. It is a physical impossibility to prevent lag as the event is occurring on a server in a different country to yourself. It's really a case of how much you see and there are so many reasons for the process to be 30 ms longer and then for your packet to be processed a tick after the person shooting you and then your packet to be delayed on the way back by 10 ms and in that time the other person who is closer to the server has shot again and killed you and then you get your packet and now you can see the enemy so you turn to shoot but you are already dead etc. etc. There are so many systems working at such a quick rate here connected by the internet which is notoriously unpredictable that without a doubt things will not line up perfectly. Lag compensation helps with that but it cannot make corrections for the unknown. Awards
