So I recently bought a 3090 and now now I really need to upgrade my motherboard and CPU.   I'm currently using a 7700k and a msi 270 carbon.  The CPU isn't currently supported by Windows 11.  Any kind of overclocking results in crashes on boot.  It is underperforming in all benchmarks i've run and has been recently crashing way more then it should be.       Been thinking about going back to AMD, maybe a threadripper...  but trying not to spend tooo much...  Suggestions?

Depends on what tasks for which it is being built; gaming, video editing, both...  This website is the best all-around for current status of any rig component.  Gives you user rating, value, benchmarks of various aspects of performance, overall rating of rig.  Can even build your own rig, see the best prices & compare to other similar or different rigs.  https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/  Much faster than asking you what you want & your budget.  AMD is releasing new architecture in a couple months; which means better choices & cheaper prices on current choices... if you're in no hurry.  If you get an amd cpu & gpu, the new architecture will allow the cpu to use the gpu's memory when appropriate to decrease latency, among other things.  The slight edge Intel has over amd in latency is about to disappear.

I will have to check that site out myself. Might build something in the middle of next year.

My last two CPUs (previous and current) were Intel. Never had a problem with them and always reliable no matter what I threw at them. I am not an overclocker etc though. I will have to investigate more about the current state of affairs for AMD. My last one worked very well but I did have to throttle it down somewhat for things like rendering because it got very hot and, of course, meaning the fans were blasting away like a jet liner. In the end, whatever gets the job done in the fastest and most efficient way. Like everyone else, all things being equal I also look at cost/performance ratios and such.

However, I am also of the mind that if something isnt broken, dont fix it. If the difference in price between matching Intel/AMD systems is say $2500 vs $3000, that $500 is not an extreme amount of money considering what you are buying and how much you will use it. So might also be best to stay with what you are most comfortable with. As before and most important, depending on what you want to do now and later.

On the other hand, that $500 could be put towards a pretty good NAS, drives not included. Now that I have had my consumer level Synology for about two years I wish I had gotten the next grade up. 😁

I actually meant Sammy wavering between gonna read it, maybe not, thinking about it, probably will.  But sure.  I'm just waiting until the New Year to see how well their new architecture will perform & what the prices on current hardware will do.

Well then, he might have a couple things to say about that... after reconsideration.

Shadow

I felt same as you upgrading with AORUS 3080Ti hit a snag with massive GPU not fit motherboard for GPU is 3.5 slots wide and is blocking the intake of chipset cooler an GPU exhaust right into it with 1/8 air space between them. is a $2,236.38 boobooo for have to go water cooled GPU

noFit.jpg

would need to water cool GPU to save MB chipset

Depends on the subject and whether or not the properties on both sides of the fence are populated by total dumb asses. Best thing to do is sit on the fence so as to not dirty your shoes by stepping in the crap they leave all over their yards. And then hope the landlords give said dumb asses the boot.

edit: Yes I currently have a water cooler.

Threadripper isn't a very good Gaming CPU unless you water cool it and overclock the shit out of it because of thee lower core clock speeds. Your better off going Ryzen.

Price wize the 8 core 16 thread 5800x is the best AMD cpu @$393.99.

The 12 core 24 thread 5900x is normally around $150 more @$549.99 and it hands down beats every Intel chip currently on the market but these damn resellers keep buying them all up and selling them for upwards of $700.

If you can get a 5900X at retail price I would jump on it.

The 16 core 32 thread 5950X isn't worth the price unless you are using your PC for Rendering. It has a much lower Core clock than the 5900X.

Your going to need a decent quality B550 or X570 motherboard with PCIe 4.0 support to utilize the full potential of a RTX 3090. And atleast 16gb of DDR4 3600 or higher. 3600 is the sweet spot for compatibility and speed with Ryzen chips but you can stick up to 128GB of DDR4 5100 on a good motherboard.

Realistically you don't need more than 16gb of memory in any gaming PC. The only way 32gb or more can possibly be used is if you are rendering multiple 4-8K videos or something.

Hell I ran 8gb of memory for almost 10 years and I never ran out of memory. Now a days FaceBook can gobble up 5gb+ using Firefox if you flip though a bunch of tabs. Heard it's much much worse using Google Chrome.
