Hi Dean...  You need to be more specific.  When does it happen? I mean do you find patterns where you try to open or close an application and this occurs.  If it is happening all the time, randomly with all apps, then I would suggest you reformat and re-install.  The reason I suggest this potentially drastic approach is that windows explorer is the heart of all Windows Operating systems, and it will not get better (unless it is specifically happening when you perform a certain task.  In that case post, and we can recommend a fix).

Hmmm Credit...  I don't mean to be rude, but why would that make any difference?  Are you actually asking him if he is using a hacked version!

Okay guys the problem starts when I open COD4MW. It shows up right after I go to the find game screen. It says,"Windows explorer has stopped working". It does it5 on other programs too, but I don't remember which ones at the moment. I went to both sites and I cannot find any diagnostics too0l that looks for and fixes this problem. I tried the "cmd" thing and on Windows 7 the selection that is given does not include the one inn the direction on the website Wildbill referred me to. Please help as this is getting really iratating!

Did you upgrade from xp/vista or did you do a clean install?

Have you done all your upgrades? (windows, sound, Video)

Have you checked your error logs to see what codes it is throwing out?

and i have to ask is this a cracked copy or store bought?

also there is this fix.

  1. Click Start.
  2. In the Search Bar, type regedit and press Enter.
  3. Locate the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions
  4. In the right pane delete this subkey: MachineThrottling
  5. Turn your computer off and back on for the change to take effect.

But this is a old fix for your problem, they have since released a update for it.

To work around the problem (I had it on Vista 64, and (rarely) on my actual W7pro, change user, and come back in. This is only a workaround, it will not solve the problem in itself...   Don't get to nervous Dean, you might be kniving me even more.....)

I had this same problem everytime that Black Ops ran. I tried just about everything and nothing worked.

Sux Tzu posted a fix to some BO problems. I went through the list just like he posted and for some reason it fixed Window Explorer problem. I don't know why, but it helped.

http://www.xtremeidiots.com/fora_topic.asp?tid=14418

It has only happened to me once in the last two weeks. In TS3 my mic would stay open. I had to restart to get to my rcon. After I played the game it always did it and now it never does. So this helped, might be something in there that someone can figure out why this worked. Good luck

Windows explorer and internet explorer are 2 seperate programs guys.

What are you running for a virus scanner ?

Turn the virus scanner off to see if thats the issue.

try using msconfig to turn off everything you do not need.

Here's a link to a good tut concern yourself with the part on startup .

This an honest clean install and I purchased with a key code.  Will try this Kash, thanks!

Labob I use to run AVG and had the problem and now I run Windows Essentials and it still does it.

I also am well aware of them being separate programs as that is why I specified the Windows Explorer. I did the config before I posted this thread so are there any other suggestions?

I think it sounds like you have two programs conflicting with each other ? Are you sure you got rid of AVG completly ? The other thing that comes to mind is a missing or corupted file. You can run a repair with your Windows 7 disk  and that should repair any damaged files on your system.

See if that helps you out

That will fix any fucked up files or duplicate shit that is fucked up.... If there are any corrupted files or what not it will fix them back to default...   An easy thing to do... Well you can do what 2cute mentioned or use cc cleaner I'm not a big fan of regi cleaning . If your registry is getting so bad that is creating problems for you then I would say to to wipe the system and reload a clean one. Anyway I wouldn't be so sure thats whats giving you the headache. When you said you ran the scanner did you mean the repait utility on you win 7 disk ?

Dean, if you have Registry Errors, I use a program called Glary Utilities.  It is free and it fixes a lot of thing,s including registry errors.  You can get it on www.CNET.COM or go here http://download.cnet.com/Glary-Utilities/3000-2094_4-10508531.html?tag=api

Good luck!
