It takes a minute but its effective. Also sometimes you must re-seat the ram in its slots as it might be making poor contact. But also is there a way of saving all my programs to the external HD then after installing the 64 bit version on my main HD transfer them back again would that work ?? You can back up all your stuff to an external drive but once you do a clean install of an OS, you will need to reinstall all your software. Especially going to a 64bit system as there will be two Program Files folders, 1 for 32bit programs and 1 for 64bit programs. Once your OS is installed, you can copy back your game profiles to the appropriate directories and your documents. There are no short cuts when going from 32bit to 64bit. That will give you a backup (on your original HD) and two then you can set it up in dual boot, with the new drive you created, and the new os you install- you can switch back and forth between operating systems, and you still have your original so you wont lose anything. I don't do much with steam so I am not clear where your game progress is stored (locally or on steam). Now as others have suggested, you can partition your current drive or add a second drive, install the 64bit OS and then you still have your current 32bit setup as backup. Don't know what you do besides gaming. What ram does is let windows load what ever is running onto ram so things run faster. you have 3.25 gig you got anything that big running ? If not just wait till you want to do a clean install again and even after that you won't notice any difference unless you start using something that is over a few gig.
