hey Baldie.........try this site and download MemTest and put it to an ISO and boot from DVD/CD drawer. It takes a minute but its effective.   Also sometimes you must re-seat the ram in its slots as it might be making poor contact.  Sorry your having such problems.

+1 Agree with Nightmare.  You want more useable memory, you need to do with 64bit OS.

Unfortunately you can not just upgrade from 32 to 64bit.  Just don't forget to back up your personal documents, game profiles, etc. otherwise you'll really be pulling your hair out then.

but i have a question about another alternative. is it possible to buy an external hard drive and instal the 64 bit system on it and use it when you want to play? that way all you needto do is install everything on it and not wipe anything out! I am asking as a suggestion!

Mmmm that might be an idea I do have an external hard drive in my cupboard.

But also is there a way of saving all my programs to the external HD then after installing the 64 bit version on my main HD transfer them back again would that work ??

Sorry Baldie.  You can back up all your stuff to an external drive but once you do a clean install of an OS, you will need to reinstall all your software.  Especially going to a 64bit system as there will be two Program Files folders, 1 for 32bit programs and 1 for 64bit programs.  Once your OS is installed, you can copy back your game profiles to the appropriate directories and your documents.  There are no short cuts when going from 32bit to 64bit.

I would get a new hard disk and create 2 partitions, you can copy your current hard disk to one and then take it out for a backup.

That will give you a backup (on your original HD) and two then you can set it up in dual boot, with the new drive you created, and the new os you install- you can switch back and forth between operating systems, and you still have your original so you wont lose anything.

Only thing is I cant remember if you can have 32 and 64 of the same os dual booting?

You could also create a dual boot partition on your present HD and run both.

Baldie, regarding steam, yes, you would have to load all your games again.  I don't do much with steam so I am not clear where your game progress is stored (locally or on steam).  Now as others have suggested, you can partition your current drive or add a second drive, install the 64bit OS and then you still have your current 32bit setup as backup.  This way you have all your personal and profile files to copy over to the 64bit side.  Good luck.

good question Labob LOL

I know I am almost running out of memory sometimes with 8GB using Adobe After Effects and Photoshop at the same time

and next time I will upgrade to 16 GB of Ram for sure

but that wont happen while you are just gaming or doing common things with your PC

oh the other side it might be nice if you paid for 8GB to work with 8GB

your turn Baldie... LOL

Still the same question but I got the amount of ram wrong jezz idiot . Don't know what you do besides gaming. What ram does is let windows load what ever is running onto ram so things run faster. you have 3.25 gig you got anything that big running ? If not just wait till you want to do a clean install again and even after that you won't notice any difference unless you start using something that is over a few gig. Hope that makes your life easyer.

I would run a dual boot system until you were happy you no longer needed to get to the 32 bit system
