Is there really a difference in Sound Cards?  I am actually using my on board sound and not using a separate sound card.  Would a separate card really add anything???

I would look at getting usb speakers, headphones, mic, before I'd worry about a new sound card. It gets rid on most of the RF interferance with your sound. Cleans it up real nice.

hell yea its different

for gaming only ?

yes !, less latency, way better sound, no or less sound artifacts such as bzzz, shz and trzzz lol

so it can help u to get a better spacialization in game.

no realtek shitty drivers no more, no windows shitty drivers no more,...

+ the fact that on my card i have like 10 times the output level than my onboard card. with better amps, no artifacts at all

for watching videos ? hell yea !

but im not using a gaming sound card, and never did, but i use external card

and im extremely happy with it

in fact i have no idea on what it differs from a gaming sound card, except in the fact that a gaming sound card got way less in and out options than an usual external card. and u can find great usb or firewire or even pci sound cards for less or not that much money.

but do u need something else than monitor/headphones output

Tried it , and really thought the onboard was better, And less hassel..Sometime setting up the sound card isn't worth it,

took it back to the store.

the only time it might be is if your really into music with a great audio system. (and I don't mean MP3 's ) lol...

Just my 2 cents..

+1

also a sound card relieves your cpu/northbridge from taking the load to produce sound and leaves more resorceses for gaming. Here is what I use.

But remember you need the empty slot and the room for it before buying.

I think it makes a lot of difference, you can actually hear more "little" sounds. I had the HT Omega Striker 7.1 but wasn't overly impressed with it,just found it to be lacking and it still relies on the CPU. I replaced it awhile ago with a Creative X-fi Titanium...what a difference, I hear even more sounds now.Whether in game I maybe know what to listen for...I don't know..but i can hear players climbing in windows and disarming betty's which alot say they can't. However I also only use headphones for gaming..that in itself can be an advantage, I had Corsair H1's analogue but they are sent back on RMA and have since bought a set of Creative Tactic 3D Sigma..they have way better sound, they do come with a USB sound card. I don't use that but gave it to Maraudergirl and it blows away her onboard sound.
