Actually, I find it hard to believe - unless the online poll was at Oxford / Cambridge Uni (etc) and only for Students studing "American History"! (all 300years of it , sorry can not resist that. heh heh) "the worst defeat for the British Empire ever." .. at this time, I think it was the ONLY defeat for the British Empire !!... AND you needed the French (as well as Mel Gibson) .. Shortly afterwards, I believe we started sending our criminals to a warm and tropical climate to live whilst we stayed here in the freezing cold and constantly pissing down with rain tiny little Island we love so much. I used to admire Washington for his moral values - there's a rare quality in a politician who becomes famous for saying, "I cannot tell a lie" - but then I learned that the story about the cherry tree was a fabrication, made up by Parson Weems. I know I didn't. He was however politically wise and set precedents as President that live to this day. I also hate to admit that without the help of France the outcome probably would have been dramatically different. Without their help we just might be still speaking "proper English" Thank God the British and French had no love for each other. Also helped that at the time England had irons in the fire all over the world and was going broke fighting wars. Jud1 1

We only see the world issues and are rather insensitive if the internal issues do not impact on us. As for President Ronald Reagan, still beloved by the consevative element in the States to this day. Hmmmm......... SOB, might I guess you are a Liberal? Obviously I am not. Politial mindsets often skew perception. My edit: While I say I am a Consevative make no mistake I oppose our countries involvement in countries like Afghanistan and Pakistan. I dislike our soldiers acting as NATO's police force. If I could bring them home today I would and let those idiots kill each other until the big dog wins. It is a bitter pill to see American, AND BRITISH, lives being lost in a war that serves us no useful purpose. Get our troops out and win with technology and economic sanctions instead of our soldiers lives. Yes, I am a bitter old man. Edited April 17, 2012 by Shamu Jud1 and hxtr 2

But interesting that Shamu, re: Involvement ... I've heard many stories as to exactly WHY we are there in the 1st place as it happens. from the obvious "Oil" and a pipeline to be built through both countries ... to the control of Opium (it's why the UK owned Hong Kong in 1st place!) and then more recently, I heard about "Lithium" http://www.bgs.ac.uk/afghanminerals/raremetal.htm In my opinion - there's something we're not privy to here that goes way past the risk of being attacked in our own countries! Agreed, bring the boys and girls home and let them kill each other ... and they will, as they have done for forever and a day! Shamu 1

And I certainly agree the United States at the time was of no threat to England at all. This was a war of economics and world domination for England, not a war because of any perceived threat from the United States. England wanted to keep the material value of the States and nothing more. I also suppose the common man in England had little say on the subject. ( IE: Rich Mans War........ on both sides.) The poll confuses me as to the criteria used. I suppose it is just an evaluation of a Generals performance taking into consideration of the odds against them and resources available, not necessarily the threat they posed to England. Socialist, isn't that somewhat of a Liberal? Providing it is pure Socialism and does not evolve into a Dictatorship. My heritage is Swedish which is a Socialist country but I'll be damned if I possess any of the Sweidsh mentality. I even hit my kids when they deserved it............. only a proper spanking mind you. BTW, I consider myself Conservative which usually aligns me with the Republican party but I have never in my life voted a straight political ticket. I pick and chose for where my vote will go. Democrat, Republican, Socialist, Libertarian of of late the Tea Party do not determine my vote. The individual candidate is the determining factor. Edited April 17, 2012 by Shamu

They may hate the English and I do not take issue with that but when they randomly target civilians I find I take exception. I have also visited her Irish family more than a few times, both here and there, and was quite surprised to find that many in the Republic of Ireland do not want unification with the North. It seems they fear the economy of the North would only hurt the Republic of Ireland.
