Wish I could hav made it there this yeear my family lives like 2 blocks away from the SpeedWay. Glad to see he wasnt severly hurt/killed.

The way the cars are built, is so that in a high speed crash like that

the car disintergrates leaving just a "survival cell" containing the driver.

as the car destroys itself a lot of the energy of the crash is dissapated

with the various parts that come away from it.

Also all the fuel lines are designed to snap apart at self sealing joints,

so that unless the fuel cell (helicopter style self-sealing rubber bladder)

is ruptured badly you won't get a fuel fire. (most flash fires you see on impact

are usually oil and brake fluid related).

Inside the "survival cell the driver is protected by a roll hoop over his head,

and another at dashboard level, so that sliding along upside down his head can't

come into contact with the track.

And I think like in F 1 the drivers feet have to be inboard of the front axle line

to prevent them suffering serious lower leg injuries.

Plus they have the hans head and neck device to prevent the type of injury that

killed Dale Earnhart

All of this stuff comes mainly from Formula One and the FIA,

 

Things have changed a lot since Imola 1994, when in my humble opinion

we lost the best racing driver ever to step into a car,-certainly the best

I have ever seen, and Iv'e been a been a F 1 fan for about 40+ years,

namly one Ayrton Senna Da Silva, R.I.P.

looks like he was not ready for take off...

I didnt know there is a pilot licence needed at Indy 500 now

 

but its the same with Formula 1 ...the cars are this safe atm
